Plot Synopsis

CHICAGO PD is spinoff of CHICAGO FIRE, focusing on the two distinct groups within District 21 of the Chicago Police Department: the uniformed cops, who patrol the beat and deal with street crimes; and the intelligence unit, which combats the city's major offenses, such as organized crime. Leading the intelligence team is Sgt. Hank Voight, a man not against skirting the law in the pursuit of justice. Demanding and tough, only those who can take the heat survive under Voight's command. Voight's hand-picked group of detectives includes: Det. Antonio Dawson, who is more level-headed and by the book than his counterpart; Jay Halstead, a brash young detective, who previously saw active military duty in the Middle East; Halstead's partner, Erin Lindsay, a former bad girl who turned her life around with Voight's help; Alvin Olinsky, an experienced undercover detective and confidante for Voight; and Kyle Ruzek, a quick-witted cadet plucked from the police academy as Olinsky's partner. They're joined by tech geek Sheldon Jin and two rising young uniform cops: Kevin Atwater, a charismatic patrolman who has an active social life; and Kim Burgess, a patrol officer, who strives to one day become a part of the elite Intelligence Unit. The Season 1 finale of CHICAGO FIRE, which aired on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, introduced new characters, many of whom became part of this spinoff series.

CHICAGO P.D. returned for its second season on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Call It Macaroni," Voight is under close watch by Internal Affairs as the Sheldon Jin murder investigation moves forward, but he's still in complete command of the intelligence unit. A routine undercover job becomes anything but when Voight's SUV is T-boned while trailing an armored car carrying Ruzek. At District, Burgess meets her new partner, Sean Roman, and tension is high from the start. Soon she realizes there's more to his story than just a guy who transferred from another district to fill the void Atwater left after his promotion to Intelligence. After a long day, Lindsay pays a visit to someone she hasn't seen in a very long time -- her mom, Bunny.

Season 3 of CHICAGO P.D. premiered on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Life Is Fluid," Intelligence is in pursuit of Derek Keyes (guest star Bokeem Woodbine), number one on Chicago's Most Wanted list and heroin kingpin. Meanwhile, Halstead tries to get through to Lindsay as her downward spiral continues after her three-week absence from the unit. At District, Olinsky opens up to Platt about a secret from his past. Roman expresses his concerns to Burgess about what she's getting into by marrying Ruzek.

The fourth season of CHICAGO P.D. premiered on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "The Silos," Intelligence investigates a gruesome case. Upon further examination, it appears the victim was wearing a CPD-issued wire at the time of his death. Meanwhile, Burgess meets her new partner, Julie Tay, who came from one of the worst assignments in the city. Together they respond to their first call, and Tay shares details of her past. Additionally, Commander Crowley confronts Lindsay about why she and Voight were at that location on the night that Intelligence pursued Justin's killer.

Season 5 of CHICAGO P.D. premiered on Wednesday, September 27 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Reform," the district is in a state of change -- Lindsay has moved to New York -- and the CPD is under scrutiny about the corrupt nature of its institution. Under the watchful eye of the city, the team attempts to bust a gun deal that quickly turns dicey when innocent civilians and children get involved. Tension erupts when Chief Lugo (guest star Esai Morales) brings in Denny Woods to review the shootout, and Halstead becomes a key player in the outcome of the case.

The sixth season of CHICAGO P.D. premiered on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "New Normal," bad heroin is causing overdoses in Chicago, and Intelligence is a man down with Voight suspended. Antonio takes charge, but Ruzek undermines his authority. On Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT, NBC debuted "Brotherhood," the mid-season premiere of CHICAGO PD. Voight and Ruzek lock horns over how to handle the aftermath of the Antonio situation. Meanwhile, a series of violent carjackings turns deadly, and Ruzek must rely on a C.I. he grew up with to help solve the case.

CHICAGO PD returned for its seventh season on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Doubt," Kelton is found murdered, and Voight's grudge against the mayor-elect puts him under suspicion. Upton and Halstead are eager to prove their sergeant's innocence, but the more evidence they gather, the closer they come to doing the opposite. After making bail, Ruzek searches for a missing Antonio. On Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT, NBC debuted "Mercy," the winter premiere of CHICAGO PD. As they await news of Halstead's fate, the team tries to focus on work, turning their attention to an illegal arms dealer. Atwater discovers his brother, Jordan, is back in Chicago and could be tied to the case. Voight faces the tricky task of how to deal with Halstead's shooter. Burgess finally makes her decision.

Season 8 of CHICAGO PD premiered on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Fighting Ghosts," the team responds to the shooting of a 5-year-old girl and they must work the case while facing new obstacles that come from the heightened attention on police reform. Atwater is targeted by a group of officers who want to hurt him for standing against the blue wall. Voight questions whether he's cut out for a new form of policing as he manages oversight from the CPD's deputy superintendent. After an eight-week break, CHICAGO PD returned with new episodes on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the winter premiere, "Tender Age," Ruzek and Burgess discover a child walking alone in the middle of the street and when they take her home, they discover her entire family has been murdered. Upton is approached with a job offer from the FBI.

The ninth season of CHICAGO PD debuted on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. At the center of the season is Sgt. Hank Voight, who is at ground zero against the war on crime in Chicago. He will do almost anything to bring criminals to justice. In the past year, Voight has fought to turn over a new leaf, carefully navigating the situation at the P.D. with a new boss who has helped him and the unit adapt to a new reality. His close-knit team of detectives share his passion for keeping the city safe, including Det. Jay Halstead, a committed and ethical detective who previously served in Afghanistan; Officer Adam Ruzek, a quick-thinker who often leads with his heart; Officer Kim Burgess, a fearless former patrol officer whose research and astute observations often lead the team in the right direction; Officer Kevin Atwater, a bright and quietly charismatic member of the team; and Det. Hailey Upton, a seasoned detective whose tough demeanor belies her complicated emotions. Desk Sgt. Trudy Platt runs a tight precinct with a firm hand, although she lets her humor shine through from time to time. After a four-week break, CHICAGO PD returned with new episodes on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the winter premiere, "Home Safe," the team searches for a missing child in what turns out to be a very complicated case. Burgess and Ruzek are in for a shock when someone from Makayla's past comes forward.
