Plot Synopsis

WOMEN WHO ROCK is a four-part documentary series that pays homage to female pioneers in music who have stormed the stage, wielded their instruments, amplified their voices, and sung the soundtrack of our lives. In their own words, generations of iconic female artists discuss truth, defiance, artistic expression, hard-won success, and most importantly, the insights and tales behind their timeless music. The docuseries features original interviews with Nancy Wilson, Shania Twain, Chaka Khan, Pat Benatar, Mavis Staples, Sheryl Crow, Sheila E., Macy Gray, Rickie Lee Jones, Norah Jones, Aimee Mann, Tori Amos, Kate Pierson, Tina Weymouth, St. Vincent, Jody Watley, and Nona Hendryx. "Over the four episodes of WOMEN WHO ROCK, these 40-plus icons illuminate not just their own place in music history, but give us the untold story of their relationship to each other. Each of these pathbreaking women built rungs for the next generation to stand -- and rock - on," said Jessica Hopper, executive producer and director. Episodes include:

"Truth" (Sunday, July 10, 2022): Dig into the turbulent roots of rock n' roll in the 1950s and 60s with Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin, Chaka Kahn and more. With supporting commentary from Norah Jones, Tina Weymouth, Rickie Lee Jones, Kate Pierson, Merry Clayton and others.

"Defiance" (Sunday, July 17, 2022):The '70s brought new sounds and icons like Nancy Wilson of Heart and Joan Jett and hard rockers like Wilson and Debbie Harry.

"Power" (Sunday, July 24, 2022): As questions of authenticity, control, and feminism arise in the '90s, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Courtney Love, Tori Amos, and Alanis Morissette make music on their own terms.

"Success" (Sunday, July 31, 2022): The hard-won success of their predecessors enables stars like Shania Twain, Macy Gray and Sarah McLachlan to overcome obstacles and reach new heights; a glimpse of the new generation: Taylor Swift, St. Vincent, Syd, Billie Eilish, Yola and more.
