Plot Synopsis

UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD is a one-hour biography series that highlights the careers of dramatic and comedic artists who have played an important role in pop culture, television and film history, but have not necessarily become household names, such as actress Pam Grier and comic Dick Gregory, as well as in-depth stories behind the making (and breaking) of influential films and TV series, such as COOLEY HIGH and WHAT'S HAPPENING!! UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD returned with new episodes on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT on TV One. The first episode featured A DIFFERENT WORLD, the iconic TV series that initially faced criticism from the Black community. Just before the episode, TV One prepared viewers for this new installment by airing a marathon of A DIFFERENT WORLD from Noon-8pm ET/PT, focusing on episodes from Season 5. On Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT on TV One, UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD returned with new episodes. The summer premiere highlights the life and career of Bernie Mac, who brought groundbreaking no-holds-barred material from Chicago's South Side into the mainstream. His remarkable journey from hardcore to primetime was cemented with the hit series THE BERNIE MAC SHOW. Chris Rock, Cedric the Entertainer, Joe Torry and D. L. Hughley are among those interviewed on this fascinating episode. The lineup for subsequent episodes includes George Wallace, Billy Dee Williams, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Car Wash. A new season of UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD premiered on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on TV One. From Whitley's almost-husband on A DIFFERENT WORLD to Papa Pope on SCANDAL, the season opener dives deep into Joe Morton's career, exploring his roles in film and television. UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD returned with new episodes on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on TV One. The summer premiere chronicles the life of Rudy Ray Moore, an American comedian, musician, singer, film actor, and film producer, who is best know for his role as Dolemite, the pimp in the 1975 film of the same name.
Tonight (Sunday, October 22, 2017) at 10pm ET/PT, TV One premieres a special editon of UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD: THE JEFFERSONS. One of the most acclaimed and successful sitcoms of all time, THE JEFFERSONS made history as the first series to showcase an upwardly mobile black family in primetime, and in so doing changed perceptions about African American life on and off screen. For 11 ground-breaking seasons, The Jeffersons kept America laughing while pushing hot button issues like racism, classism, interracial marriage, gender identity and women's rights. Along the way, the series garnered 13 Emmy nominations, and made iconic stars out of Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford and Marla Gibbs. When Sanford won in 1981, she was just the second African American actress to win an Emmy Award. In addition to commentary from Marla Gibbs, insights for Unsung Hollywood: The Jeffersons are provided by family and friends, including Norman Lear, Berlinda Tolbert, Don B. Welch and Ernest L. Thomas.
