Plot Synopsis

In this spin-off of BLACK-ISH, Zoey Johnson -- Dre and Rainbow's popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year-old daughter -- heads off to college and quickly discovers that not everything goes her way once she leaves the nest. The series opens with Zoey arriving at California University, where she is certain she will be a hot shot on campus, but quickly learns she may have a little more growing to do -- especially when she starts to experience FOMO for the first time in her life as she tries to juggle schoolwork, extracurricular activities and, of course, partying. As Zoey navigates life as a college freshman, this half-hour comedy series tackles current social issues and complexities facing both students and administrators.

The 20-episode second season of GROWN-ISH premiered on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 8-9pm ET/PT on Freeform. After the wide-eyed firsts of their freshman year, Season 2 follows Zoey and her friends as they enter their second year at CalU with confidence and swagger. Learning from the ups and downs of their first year, they all assume they've got their second year on lock, but quickly realize that they're not as grown as they think. Reprising their roles are Yara Shahidi as popular but entitled Zoey Johnson, Trevor Jackson as socially conscious Aaron Jackson, Francia Raisa as outspoken conservative Latina Ana Torres, Emily Arlook as openly and actively bisexual Nomi Segal, Jordan Buhat as troublemaker Vivek Shah, Chloe Bailey and Halle Bailey as twins and sporty-savants Jazz Forster and Sky Forster, Luka Sabbat as mellow and fashion-forward Luca Hall, and Deon Cole as eccentric and unpredictable Professor Charles Telphy. Season 2 debuted with back-to-back new episodes. After a three-month break, GROWN-ISH returned with new episodes on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform. Zoey is left to deal with the aftermath of getting caught cheating on her exam, including getting cut off financially by her parents. The gang returns as confident, eager and seasoned upper-classmen, with Zoey and her girls (and Vivek) moving into an off-campus home, ready to take on the school year. They quickly realize that they have been mistaken about the disillusionment of adulthood, with real-life problems coming for them, including student loans, work/life balance and, of course, messy breakups. Zoey returns from her summer internship abroad and realizes that she has to confront her feelings for Aaron and Luca quickly. When she learns about Luca's grand gesture last semester, she needs to decide how she feels about it while balancing the high demand of her dream job, working for Joey Bada$$. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew is left to deal with some of the repercussions of their big mistakes before summer break, including an unexpected reveal of someone expecting. After a 10.5-month break, GROWN-ISH returned with new episodes on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform. She wonders if life outside of Cal U is all it's cracked up to be or if she still has some growing left to do; meanwhile, Jazz and Doug struggle with the rules of their relationship "pause."
