Plot Synopsis

This one-hour drama series follows the interns, residents, and doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital as they juggle their complicated personal lives with the stress and competitiveness of life-and-death medical decisions. The series started with the trials and tribulations of five first-year surgical interns: Meredith Grey, the show's namesake (and narrator) who is the daughter of a former Seattle Grace surgeon and now the wife of Derek Shepherd, the Chief of Neurosurgery; Cristina Yang, Meredith's very career-oriented best friend, who was left at the altar by Preston Burke before she married Owen Hunt many years later; Alex Karev, a discourteous womanizer, who became involved with patient Ava and was later married to Izzie Stevens before she asked him for a divorce; Izzie Stevens, who is a recent cancer survivor, fell in love with patient Denny Duquette, accidentally killed him as she tried to get him a new heart, and was later dismissed from Seattle Grace for other issues with patient care; and George O'Malley, who, despite his passive personality, still managed to sleep with Meredith, marry Callie Torres, and cheat on Callie with Izzie and who sacrificed his own life to save a girl from being hit by a bus. Having passed their boards in Season 8, Meredith, Cristina, Alex, and Jackson Avery all planned on taking positions at different hospitals, leaving Seattle Grace behind. But that was before the plane crash at the end of Season 8 that left the fates of Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Mark and Arizona in doubt, while taking the life of Lexie Grey, Meredith's half-sister and Seattle Grace resident who was in relationships with Mark, Alex, and Jackson, a surgical resident and grandson of famous surgeon Dr. Harper Avery. Meanwhile, April Kepner's career as a doctor seemed to be over when she failed her exam and was fired. Also before the crash, Meredith and Derek were focused on being new parents to baby Zola and were debating whether to move into their dream house or start over in Boston. Cristina and Owen's marriage was still on the rocks, and Callie and Arizona were happily settling into motherhood. Bailey had decided to give love another chance with her new fiance, Ben, and Richard Webber found comfort in the arms of Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery. At the end of the ninth season, the hospital staff endured another disaster -- this time, a storm hit Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Season 10 opened with a two-hour premiere event that picked up with the storm that ended the previous season. A giant mudslide in Seattle injured a group of first responders and citizens, causing the already shorthanded ER to spring into action. Meanwhile, Meredith was faced with a tough decision that will affect the life of a loved one, Richard's life was in extreme danger, and Callie was rocked by the reality of Arizona's infidelity, forcing her to make a bold decision about their relationship. GREY'S ANATOMY returned for its eleventh season on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 8pm ET/PT on ABC. In the season opener, "I Must Have Lost It On The Wind," a new doctor, Maggie Pierce, makes the rounds and Derek wants to move to Washington DC, as Meredith struggles to regain a sense of normalcy both at home and in the hospital after Cristina's departure. Meanwhile, Callie and Arizona come to a decision about surrogacy, Amelia overhears a big secret, Bailey realizes she will have to fight Alex for Cristina's board seat and a freak accident causes two teenagers to be caught in a very compromising position. ABC premiered Season 12 of GREY'S ANATOMY on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT, with Debbie Allen and Joey Lauren Adams guest starring in the "Sledgehammer" episode, which is directed by series star Kevin McKidd. Seattle Grace Hospital springs into action to save the lives of two young girls whose powerful story will force some of the doctors to revisit the effects of bullying on their own pasts. Meanwhile, Meredith must adjust to changes at home with her new roommates while Bailey continues to fight for the Chief of Surgery position and Jackson prepares for April's return to Seattle. Season 13 of GREY'S ANATOMY premiered on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on ABC. In the season opener, "Undo," when one of Grey Sloan's own lands in the hospital, Bailey tries to figure out what happened while the rest of the doctors jump in to help. Meredith juggles huge secrets that affect her relationships with Alex and Maggie. While Richard helps Jo with a big decision, April and Catherine clash over the new baby. Season 14 of GREY'S ANATOMY premiered on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 8-10pm ET/PT, as ABC debuted back-to-back new episodes: "Break Down the House" (8pm) -- Meredith and the team are focused on helping Owen's sister after her shocking return, and Amelia faces a conflict over a patient. Meanwhile, Bailey is forced to give Grey Sloan a facelift after the fire, and the doctors are introduced to a few new faces that spice things up around the hospital; "Get Off on the Pain" (9pm) -- Meredith struggles to come up with a new plan for Owen's sister. Jo makes a surprising choice regarding Alex, and Andrew's sister's controversial research leads to a shocking discovery.

On Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT, ABC premiered "All of Me," the Season 14 finale of GREY'S ANATOMY. Tonight the staff at Grey-Sloan Memorial attend the long-awaited wedding of Alex and Jo but, as usual things get twisty as the guest await the couple to walk down the aisle, the bride and groom get themselves locked in a shed. Meanwhile, the stress from the past year has taken a toll on Bailey, and she will re-evaluate some of her decisions. This episode, directed by Debbie Allen, marks the last episode for Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) and Dr. April Kepner (Sara Drew). Said creator Shonda Rhimes: "It's always hard for me to say goodbye to any of my characters. Both Arizona Robbins and April Kepner are not only beloved but iconic -- both the LBGTQ and devout Christian communities are underrepresented on TV. I will be forever grateful to both Jessica and Sarah for bringing these characters to life with such vibrant performances and for inspiring women around the globe. They will always be a part of our Shondaland family." Guest starring are Debbie Allen as Catherine Avery, Justin Bruening as Matthew Taylor, Stefania Spampinato as Carina Deluca, Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt, Alex Blue Davis as Casey Parker, Rushi Kota as Vik Roy, Sophia Ali Taylor as Dahlia Qadri and Jaicy Elliot as Taryn Helm.

Two days earlier -- on Tuesday, May 15 -- ABC announced that GREY'S ANATOMY will return for its fifteenth season in the Fall, continuing to air Thursdays at 8pm.
