Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by David Shore and Daniel Dae Kim, THE GOOD DOCTOR is a one-hour drama series that centers on Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who relocates from a quiet country life to join the prestigious St. Bonaventure hospital's surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, his only advocate, Dr. Aaron Glassman, challenges the skepticism and prejudices of the hospital's board and staff when he brings him in to join the team. Shaun will need to work harder than he ever has before, as he navigates his new environment and relationships to prove to his colleagues that his extraordinary medical gifts will save lives.

The sophomore season of THE GOOD DOCTOR premiered on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, and Paige Spara have been promoted to series regulars for Season 2. In the season opener, "Hello," Shaun's proposed treatment for a homeless patient puts him and Jared in Andrews' crosshairs. Meanwhile, Claire tries to overcome Melendez's reluctance to do a risky heart operation while Glassman must overcome his personal feelings about his oncologist, Dr. Marina Blaize (new recurring guest star Lisa Edelstein), and face a difficult decision about his health.

Season 3 of THE GOOD DOCTOR premiered on Monday, September 23, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. As his friendships deepen, Shaun tackles the world of dating for the first time and continues to work harder than he ever has before, navigating his environment to prove to his colleagues that his talents as a surgeon will save lives. In the season opener, "Disaster," written by David Shore, following what he believes was a disastrous first date with Carly, Dr. Shaun Murphy proposes a radical surgery to save a newlywed woman's life. Meanwhile, after the new chief of surgery, Dr. Audrey Lim, announces that the residents can lead surgeries, Dr. Morgan Reznick and Dr. Alex Park compete for the chance to operate on an elderly patient who has been diagnosed with cancer.

THE GOOD DOCTOR returns for its fourth season on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. In "Frontline (Part 1)," the first installment of the two-part season opener, Dr. Shaun Murphy treats a patient with an illness that is not only unpredictable in nature, but also unlike anything he or the team at San Jose St. Bonaventure has ever seen before. As safety protocols and quarantines increase due to the global pandemic, Lea and Shaun's new relationship will become tested; and Dr. Alex Park gets ready to move back to Phoenix, Arizona, to be closer to his family. Meanwhile, Dr. Morgan Reznick navigates her way around the clinic following her departure from the surgery team and unknowingly puts herself and several members of the staff in danger. Finally, Dr. Claire Brown continues to work through her grief, still reeling from the sudden death of Dr. Neil Melendez.

On Monday, September 27, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT, ABC premiered the fifth season of THE GOOD DOCTOR. The season opener, "New Beginnings," was written by David Shore and Liz Friedman, and directed by Mike Listo. Shaun and Lea's upcoming engagement party has everyone in a festive mood after their return from Guatemala. Meanwhile, a young single mother learns her son may have contracted his cancer from a surprising source, and Mateo finds out if his previous issues in America will be resolved. After a two-month break, THE GOOD DOCTOR returned with new episodes on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. In the mid-season premiere, "Rebellion," now that Shaun has called off the wedding, he is forced to confront Lea about their relationship and determine what he really means to her. Meanwhile, the team debates their opinions on plastic surgery, and Lim hopes to expose Salen's (guest star Rachel Bay Jones) cover-up over an infant's death to take her down before it is too late.

Season 6 of THE GOOD DOCTOR premiered on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. Following their long-awaited wedding festivities and his promotion to surgical attending, Shaun and Lea's relationship is immediately put to the test and they must learn to navigate life together as a married couple. Meanwhile, the team is dealing with changes at the hospital and in their personal lives that will present new emotional and interpersonal challenges for them. In the season opener, "Afterparty," Shaun and Lea's long-awaited wedding reception is interrupted by a violent attack at the hospital and the entire team must mobilize to save the victims. Meanwhile, the trauma of seeing people he cares for in life-threatening situations is affecting Shaun in more ways than one. After a six-week break, THE GOOD DOCTOR returned with new episodes on Monday, January 23, 2023 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. In the winter premiere, "Quiet and Loud," Shaun and Lea soon learn that their surprise pregnancy may also come with additional complications. Meanwhile, Doctors Park, Reznick and Allen treat a teen with Gardner's syndrome whose past surgical history jeopardizes the outcome of his current one.

The seventh and final season of THE GOOD DOCTOR premiered on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. In the farewell season, new challenges intermingle with the unresolved past. Following the birth of their son, Steve, Shaun and Lea navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood. Meanwhile, the team continues to deal with the many changes they have faced at the hospital over the past year and must learn to come to terms with them if they want to move forward in their lives and careers.

In the season opener, "Baby, Baby, Baby," Shaun and Lea adjust to parenthood as they debate the importance of schedule and routine for Steve. Meanwhile, Shaun takes on his first case back at the hospital with two baby patients in need of the same heart.
