Plot Synopsis

Every January the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognizes achievements in television and motion pictures by conferring Golden Globe Awards. In 2013, the HFPA honors recipients in 25 categories -- 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. In 1943 foreign journalists, led by the correspondent for Britain's Daily Mail, formed the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA), and the HFCA presented its first award in early 1944 in an informal ceremony at 20th Century Fox, where it honored Best Film (THE SONG OF BERNADETTE), Best Actress (Jennifer Jones for THE SONG OF BERNADETTE) and Best Actor (Paul Lukas for WATCH ON THE RHINE). Only seven years after forming, a schism amongst members in 1950 caused the HFPA to split into two groups -- the HFCA and the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood -- with each group conferring its own award. The separation was short-lived, and in 1955 the two groups reunited as the HFPA. Shortly after its reunion, in 1955 the HFPA first recognized achievements in television with a new category, Best Television Show, honoring the following programs: DINAH SHORE, LUCY & DESI, THE AMERICAN COMEDY and DAVY CROCKETT. The Golden Globes soon found their way to televisions across America. In 1958 the Globes were first televised locally in Los Angeles, and the Globe Awards made a national debut in 1964 on a special segment of THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW. This event did not have a host until 2010, when Ricky Gervais hosted the first of three consecutive years.
The 78th Annual GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, co-hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, was telecast live coast-to-coast on NBC from 8-11pm ET / 5-8pm PT from the Beverly Hilton Hotel (Poehler) and the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center in New York City (Fey). This year's Globes Ambassadors (assisting with the handing out of the trophies) are Satchel and Jackson Lee, children of three-time Golden Globe nominee Spike Lee and producer Tonya Lewis Lee. Celebrity presenters include: Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Annie Mumolo, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Wiig, Renee Zellweger, Kevin Bacon, Sterling K. Brown, Michael Douglas, Kyra Sedgwick, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones were added to the list on Feb 19. Anthony Anderson, Tiffany Haddish, Kate Hudson, Margot Robbie, Kenan Thompson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Christopher Meloni, Rosie Perez, Christian Slater, Angela Bassett, Laura Dern, Salma Hayek, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more.

Norman Lear receives the third Carol Burnett Award, which is presented annually to someone who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. The inaugural Carol Burnett Award was awarded to Carol Burnett at the 2019 GOLDEN GLOBES and was named in her honor.

Jane Fonda receives the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
