Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and David E. Kelley and based on Liane Moriarty's book of the same name, BIG LITTLE LIES is a one-hour dramedy series set in the tranquil seaside town of Monterey, California, where nothing is quite as it seems. Doting moms, successful husbands, adorable children, beautiful homes: What lies will be told to keep their perfect worlds from unraveling? Told through the eyes of three mothers -- Madeline, Celeste and Jane -- this seven-episode limited series paints a picture of a town fueled by rumors and divided into the haves and have-nots, exposing the conflicts, secrets and betrayals that compromise relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors. The mothers of Monterey include: Madeline Martha Mackenzie, a whirlwind of energy and good intentions, whose compulsion to set things right has unintended consequences; Celeste Wright, the envy of her peers and a statuesque beauty, who appears to have it all -- twins, wealth and the perfect husband; Jane, a single mom of modest means with a mysterious past, who is new not only to Monterey but to the complicated social hierarchy of Otter Bay Elementary School, where her son is a student; Renata Klein, a powerful career woman, who is an anti-bullying crusader at the center of schoolyard politics -- on and off the playground; and Bonnie Carlson, married to Madeline's ex-husband, who is a spiritual yoga instructor and a sensitive soul with a strong moral compass.

Returning for a second season on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on HBO, this subversive, darkly comedic drama explores the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode...the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom. The Monterey Five -- Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) -- are joined by Celeste's visiting mother-in-law, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep), and their husbands Ed (Adam Scott), Nathan (James Tupper) and Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling). In the season opener, "What Have The Done?," following first-day-of-school events, Madeline is worried by Bonnie's behavior and, later, is shocked when Abigail says she doesn't want to go to college. Mary Louise, Celeste's mother-in-law, offers her unvarnished assessment of Madeline's character. Jane learns from her new coworker, Corey, that she's known in town as one of the "Monterey Five."

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

On Tuesday, January 7, 2020 Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released BIG LITTLE LIES: The Complete 2nd Season on DVD and Blu-ray with all 7 twisty good episodes. The series returned with more drama, secrets, and seduction then ever before. In Season 2, on the surface, everything seems the same in the seaside town of Monterey, CA: mothers continue to dote, husbands support, children are adorable, houses are beautiful. But the night of the school fundraiser changed all that, leaving the community reeling as the "Monterey Five" bond together to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Meanwhile, Perry's grieving mother Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) comes to town in search of answers after her son's death. Iconic actress Meryl Streep joins the all-star cast in Season 2, along with Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz. With an all-star cast of this caliber, along with the plot twists and reveals in Season 2, you will be glued to the screen on the edge of your seat until the very end of the season. As always, Meryl Streep gives a tour de force performance, not to be missed. Run Time: Approx. 456 min. A must own for BIG LITTLE LIES fans! Buy and binge now!
