Plot Synopsis

Based on the best-selling Nick Hornby novel and subsequent 2002 film starring Hugh Grant, this single-camera comedy centers on the relationship between Will Freeman, a single and unemployed man-child, and Marcus, the 11-year-old who moved in next door with his nerdy single mom, Fiona. After writing a hit song, Will was granted a life of free time, free love and freedom from financial woes, until his perfect world is interrupted when Marcus drops by unannounced. Will's not so sure about being a kid's new best friend, until, of course, Will discovers that women find single dads irresistible. That changes everything and a deal is struck: Marcus will pretend to be Will's son and, in return, Marcus is allowed to chill at Will's house, play ping-pong and gorge on steaks, something his very vegan mom would never allow. Before he realizes it, Will starts to enjoy the visits, even finding himself looking out for the kid. NBC aired a commercial-free special premiere of this series on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:05pm ET/PT, immediately following coverage of the Winter Olympic Games that night, and then moved the series to its regular timeslot with a new episode on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT. Season 2 premiered on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 9:30pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "About a Vasectomy," Will returns to San Francisco to sort out his finances after a surprising royalty check. Andy reveals to him that his wife Laurie might be pregnant and he needs Will's help to find out. Meanwhile, Marcus's new friends don't sit well with Will and he attempts to convince Fiona that the kids are up to no good.
