Plot Synopsis

Based on the book by Gina Kell and Michael Spehn. When young husband and father Matt Kell succumbs to cancer on Christmas Day 2005, his widow Gina and their two young boys are left to cope with the pain of his loss while their close church community gathers around them for support. When Gina volunteers at her kids' elementary school, she meets three children who have just lost their mother to cancer. Their trauma-stricken father, Michael Spehn, is left to care for the three youngsters on his own. When Gina sees all of this playing out before her eyes -- just as it had weeks before in her own life -- she is drawn to comfort and nurture Michael and his motherless children, and they soon begin to forge an unlikely friendship. During the year that follows, their lives become intertwined as they learn to lean on each other during, at-times, insurmountable obstacles. They begin to heal with laughter, compassion and faith. And, when Gina and Michael realize their new-found bond could be more than just friendship, they struggle against surprising resistance from their families and community to unite their two grieving families as one, and eventually learn to open their hearts to love again.
