Plot Synopsis
Based on the novel by Dorothy West. In 1953, the light-skinned African American daughter of an affluent mixed-race family is caught between the affections of her fiance, a struggling white jazz musician, and a darkly handsome black businessman who come to woo her just days before her wedding. Her snobby, domineering mother is outraged that her defiant daughter is ruining the families social standing among the denizens of a wealthy black enclave in Martha's Vineyard.
