Plot Synopsis

Created and written by Chicago improv-mainstays Abby McEnany and Tim Mason, WORK IN PROGRESS is a half-hour comedy series that features McEnany as a fictionalized version of herself, a 45 year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship. A finely-crafted cocktail of depression, OCD, queerness and anxiety, Abby's life is in a quiet and perpetual crisis, despite her ability to charm those around her with her self-deprecating and endearing personality. When her confident, suburban sister Alison determinedly sets her up with Chris, a younger, sexually explorative trans man, things start to radically shift in Abby's mind in terms of her self-identity and self-worth, allowing her to rethink her choices and even confront the woman who "ruined her life," Julia Sweeney. With the help of her acerbic best friend Campbell, Abby attempts to navigate her way through modern-day dating, therapy mishaps, rude co-workers and more.

The second season of WORK IN PROGRESS premiered on Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 11pm-Midnight ET/PT, with back-to-back new episodes on Showtime. Season 2 picks back up with McEnany's character Abby in the wake of her breakup (and almost out of almonds). A 46-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke, Abby begrudgingly accepts that she's too busy to kill herself. In fact, she's just starting to get her head above water... when a global pandemic converges with a family emergency and forces her into uncharted territory.

On Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 11pm ET/PT, Showtime premiered "I Release You," the Season 2 finale of WORK IN PROGRESS. Abby and Julia venture into uncharted waters, the family throws a party, and Abby finds herself ending one relationship just as she begins a new one. The fate of her last almond hangs in the balance, so Abby has a nice long talk with herself before making any decisions. There's definitely no going back now.
