Plot Synopsis

Inspired by Devery S. Anderson's book, "Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement," WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT is a six-episode historical drama series that focuses on Mamie Till Mobley, who devoted her life to seeking justice for her son Emmett Till following his brutal murder in the Jim Crow South. Unwilling to let Emmett's murder disappear from the headlines, Mamie chose to bear her pain on the world's stage, emerging as an activist for justice and igniting the civil rights movement as we know it today. Each Thursday night from 8-10pm ET/PT, ABC premieres two episodes of WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT, beginning January 6 through January 20, 2022.

"Mother and Son" (Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 8pm): Mamie Till Mobley, a young mother living a simple life in Chicago, begrudgingly lets her adventurous 14-year-old son, Emmett, go on vacation with his great uncle and cousins to Mississippi. Days after his arrival, tragedy strikes and Mamie is faced with a mother's worst nightmare when her son goes missing.

"Only Skin" (Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 9pm): After receiving the call that her son was kidnapped by white men in Mississippi, Mamie rallies her community in Chicago to bring Emmett home. As a result, Mamie is thrust into the spotlight while facing unimaginable tragedy.

"Let the People See" (Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 8pm): After her son's body is recovered in Mississippi, Mamie insists on having a public wake with an open casket to ensure that he did not die in vain. The case becomes national news, which puts pressure on Mississippi officials to do the unthinkable -- go to trial.

"Manhunt" (Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 9pm): A historic trial begins, and on the eve of her testimony, Mamie must face the three people responsible for her son's murder, while also facing some ugly truths in the Jim Crow South.

"Mothers and Sons" (Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 8pm): The two mothers at the center of the Emmett Till murder, Carolyn Bryant and Mamie Till-Mobley, testify about his character in front of a packed courtroom.

"The Last Word" (Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 9pm): After the verdict is reached and the story becomes international news, a movement begins -- and Mamie Till-Mobley fights to defend Emmett's legacy.
