Plot Synopsis

Europe's abandoned castles are magnificent markers of the continent's tempestuous history. But where they once hosted royalty, these empty, hulking structures have now been overtaken by the wildlife and rich natural environments flourishing around them. From peregrine falcons ruling the bell towers of Germany's Heidelberg Castle to exotic amphibians thriving in the spring-fed fountains of Spain's iconic Alhambra palace, explore the curious history of these imposing European structures and meet the creatures that call them home.

WILD CASTLES had its U.S. linear television premiere on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 8pm ET/PT, as Smithsonian Channel debuted the "Heidelberg" episode, which focuses on Heidelberg Castle, which was once home to the country's first university. Now, it has become part of the surrounding ecosystem. From toads swimming in the grounds' fountains to peregrine falcons nesting in the bell tower, tour a medieval mausoleum steeped in nature.
Smithsonian aired "Neuschwanstein," the finale of WILD CASTLES on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 8pm ET/PT. The landscape surrounding Neuschwanstein Castle is famous for its rugged peaks, deep gorges, and river valleys packed with wildlife. Alpine ibex are at home on the surrounding tricky slopes, while golden eagles patrol the skies above. Embark on a rich journey through the human and natural history of these medieval grounds.
