Plot Synopsis

In each one-hour episode of VACATION HOUSE FOR FREE, contractor and real-estate expert Matt Blashaw helps a couple find a vacation house and then transforms it into a property that earns enough rental income to cover the home's cost, allowing the owners to live there for free the rest of the year. Matt searches for a diamond in the rough, usually a home in a dream location that needs updating and costs less than $600-700k. Then, the new owners set aside $30,000 for renovations, supplemented by the show, so that Matt can use his tricks of the trade to help them renovate the property and position it for the rental market. In each 60-minute episode, Matt helps one family, including: Patrick and Lisa Dobbins, who are looking for a vacation home for their family by the beach in Monterey where they can create lasting memories with their two children; the Hicks family, who are looking for a 3 bedroom, two bath with an open floor plan and pool for their four young children to enjoy Marco Island; the Gordon family, who are hoping to buy a rustic, three bedroom-two bath home with convenient access to both the Lake and the mountains of Lake Tahoe; and many more families looking for a home that will ultimately allow them to live their dream in their vacation paradise. HGTV aired a sneak-peek episode of this series on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 5pm ET/PT, more than seven months before the official series premiere on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.
