Plot Synopsis

UNDERGROUND MARVELS is a one-hour docuseries that uncovers subterranean phenomena around the globe, their impressive stories, unique origins, essential roles throughout history, and the secrets they keep hidden deep below. From a network of cellars, wells and tunnels in the Czech Republic once used to create the world's most popular beer to the secret caverns and rock formations of the Cheddar Gorge in Southwest England, the series spotlights the wonders that exist beneath our feet. Throughout the series, historians, engineers, and experts reveal the sheer scale of these underground structures that seem to defy human imagination. While some underground worlds were designed and built by humans, such as the impenetrable system of underground WWII Nazi bunkers along The Channel Islands, others were created over thousands of years by the harshest of nature's elements, like the legendary caves of Slovenia once believed by locals to be the portal doors of hell.

The second season of UNDERGROUND MARVELS premiered on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at 9pm ET/pT on Science Channel. In Season 2, historians, engineers, and experts reveal underground structures that seem to defy human imagination, from Southwest England to Moldova and beyond. In South Dakota, a decommissioned military bunker lies abandoned 200-feet below the ground. Now, 50 years later, how has this massive silo been repurposed for a new generation? In Exeter, England, a mysterious underground tunnel system lies hidden below the city. Who built these secret passageways? And how have they evolved over the centuries? Thousands of miles away on historic Route 66 lies the entrance to a network of deep caves, the largest dry caverns in North America. But how much more remains undiscovered?

In the season opener, "Hotel Bunker of the Apocalypse," the top-secret construction of a massive nuclear bunker remained concealed under a palatial West Virginia hotel for decades; experts reveal how this vast subterranean structure was one of the most closely guarded Cold War secrets in U.S. history.
