Plot Synopsis

Based on the Scandanavian TV series BRON, THE TUNNEL is set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. When a prominent French politician is found dead in the middle of the Channel Tunnel, straddling the border between the UK and France, detectives Karl Roebuck and Elise Wassermann are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries. The case takes a surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, forcing the French and British police into an uneasy partnership. As the serial killer uses ever more elaborate and ingenious methods to highlight the moral bankruptcy of modern society, Karl and Elise are drawn deeper into his increasingly personal agenda. PBS aired the U.S. premiere of THE TUNNEL on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at 10:30pm (check local listings). PBS aired the U.S. premiere of the second season of this series, titled THE TUNNEL: SABOTAGE, on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 9pm (check local listings). In Season 2, the newly promoted Commander Elise Wasserman and laconic but brilliant DCI Karl Roebuck reunite to examine the case of a French couple abducted from the Eurotunnel, leaving behind their traumatized small daughter, Chloe Fournier. The case becomes complicated when a plane carrying British and French passengers crashes into the Channel killing everyone on board. Suddenly the duo is faced with far bigger questions, and people are waiting for answers. As Wasserman and Roebuck pick their way through the clues thrown up by a vast field of debris, forging connections as they go, they are confronted with sinister and complicated forces at play. In a terrifying game of brinksmanship, they risk everything in the pursuit of true justice. THE TUNNEL: VENGEANCE, the third and final season of this series, had its U.S. premiere on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at 10:30pm on PBS (check local listings). This season, the investigative pair takes on a toxic and terrifying folie a deux whose mutual defining quality is an existential death wish. When the question posed by the couple -- what is a life worth? -- is directed straight back at Karl, he is forced to confront an utterly impossible choice that will haunt the audience long after the closing credits. Set amidst mid-Brexit hysteria, THE TUNNEL: VENGEANCE tackles an escalating refugee crisis and examines the increasing threat of terror occasioned by disenfranchised, exiled souls on whom society has turned its back. The season opens with Karl and Elise reuniting for an emotive and morally complex investigation when a boat carrying child refugees is torched in the middle of the Channel, leaving no sign of its passengers.
