Plot Synopsis

Each year since 1993, the Trumpet Awards Foundation has celebrated African-American achievement in diverse fields such as law, religion, politics, public service, sports and entertainment. Created by TBS corporate vice president of urban affairs, Xernona Clayton, as a Black History Month tribute to herald the accomplishments of Black Americans and others who have enhanced the quality of life for all Americans, the awards' name was taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s phrase "trumpet of conscience."
The 29th Annual TRUMPET AWARDS premiered on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 8pm ET/PT on Bounce TV.

Honorees include:

Tommie Smith ("The Xernon Clayton Award of Distinction," which recognizes individuals who, having succeeded against immense odds, herald change and prosperity to enhance and enrich the world): Cheered by some, jeered by others and ignored by many more, Olympian and world-class athlete Tommie Smith dedicated his life to activism and fighting against oppression. During the historic 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith broke the world and Olympic record with a time of 19.83 seconds and became the 200-meter Olympic champion. As Smith and bronze-medal winner John Carlos stood on the victory podium, each raised a clenched fist covered in a black leather glove in a historic stand for black power, liberation and solidarity. This courageous, unexpected worldwide event propelled Smith into the spotlight as a human rights spokesman, activist and symbol of African American pride at home and abroad.

Naomi Campbell ("Vanguard Award," which recognizes individuals who creatively challenge the norm by introducing mainstream culture to avant-garde ideas and making a social impact in their respective industry): International supermodel, activist and philanthropist Naomi Campbell is one of the most prolific and influential profiles of contemporary culture today. Naomi has championed the modeling industry, fronted the covers of more than a thousand magazines and has been featured in advertising campaigns for celebrated luxury houses including Burberry, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino. Her numerous accolades include being the first black model to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, French and Russian Vogue as well as the first British black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue. Today, Naomi is undoubtedly solidifying her place as a cultural innovator -- using her incredible platform and success for positive change across industries around the world.

Yara Shahidi ("Trailblazer Award," which recognizes pioneers who inspire others to follow their path to greatness with innovative ideas that challenge the status quo): Yara Shahidi is an actress, executive producer, change agent and breakout star of ABC's Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated comedy ABC series BLACK-ISH and its spinoff GROWN-ISH on Freeform. The recipient of many prestigious awards and an advocate for womens issues, Shahidi is one of Hollywood's most heralded young talents as she continues to use her platform to empower and inspire others.

Stacey Abrams ("Valor Award," which recognizes a bold and courageous individual whose moral compass directs their impassioned fight toward fairness and the betterment of society while overcoming insurmountable odds): Stacey Abrams is the New York Times bestselling author of Our Time is Now and Lead from the Outside, a serial entrepreneur, nonprofit CEO, and political leader. After serving as Minority Leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, Abrams became the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, where she won more votes than any other Democrat in the state's history. Over the course of her career, she founded multiple organizations devoted to voting rights, training and hiring young people of color and tackling social issues.

Among the special guests helping to pay tribute to the honorees are Mariah Carey, Lee Daniels, Jesse Williams, Trevor Jackson, Angela Davis and Bakari Sellers. In addition, this year's ceremony features musical performances from Busta Rhymes, Anthony Hamilton, Terrace Martin and Bell Biv Devoe.
