Plot Synopsis

Created by, written by, and starring Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman -- both of whom are deaf, playing best friends who are also deaf -- THIS CLOSE is a half-hour scripted series that explores the relationship between these two BFFs: Kate, who is newly engaged, and Michael, who is attempting to move on from his ex-fiance. Their circle of friends, family and co-workers includes: Danny, Kate's fiance; Stella, a PR maven and Kate's boss; Ryan, Michael's ex; and Michael's mother, Annie, a recovering alcoholic trying to reconnect with her son. In the series opener, "Like I Always Wanted," Kate accompanies Michael on a trip to Seattle for a bookstore signing event. But when Michael learns the big secret Kate's been keeping from him it leads to unexpected trouble with airport security. Then, in the second episode, "Who We Are," Kate's boss asks her to fill a spot in a Disabilities in Media panel and she must decide whether to confront her tokenization or play along. Michael's ex-BF Ryan shows up unannounced to dinner. Based on a series of shorts that was featured at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival's Short Form Episodic Showcase, THIS CLOSE is the first straight-to-series order for Sundance Now, which released the first two episodes on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. Plus, Sundance Now also released NOW THE DISCUSSION: THIS CLOSE, a 20-minute companion series during which hosts Castille, Blake V, Karma McCain and Michael Litchfield -- as well as members of the cast and crew of THIS CLOSE -- discuss the series.
Season 2 of THIS CLOSE premiered on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Midnight ET/PT, as Sundance TV debuted back-to-back new episodes. Kate and Michael are determined to reboot their friendship. But what's that they say about best laid plans? Kate's past returns to haunt her in surprising ways as she finds her voice at work. Michael tries to walk the straight and narrow path, but everyone sees the truth except for him. With the return of old flames and distant parents, Kate and Michael are going to have to lean on each other or fall apart. The new season features new guest stars Marcia Cross, Camryn Manheim, Steven Weber, Austin Nichols, Lisa Rinna, Margaret Cho, and Millicent Simmonds. They join guest stars Zach Gilford, Colt Prattes, Marlee Matlin, Cheryl Hines, Nyle DiMarco and Moshe Kasher who reprise their roles from Season 1. In the first two episodes of the new season:

"Look Both Ways" (Midnight): Kate fights over Michael with Ryan, Danny, and the hospital staff who don't understand how to deal with deaf patients; Ryan and Michael make a hasty decision that sends Kate spinning, and by the time the sun rises, the two friends are worlds apart.

"No Place Like Home" (12:30am): Home in Georgia for her grandmother's 80th birthday and to mend her heart, Kate runs into her ex-fiance and starts to wonder about the path not taken; Kate unintentionally derails her mother's intricate plans for the party.
