Plot Synopsis

Created by, written by, and starring Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman -- both of whom are deaf, playing best friends who are also deaf -- THIS CLOSE is a half-hour scripted series that explores the relationship between these two BFFs: Kate, who is newly engaged, and Michael, who is attempting to move on from his ex-fiance. Their circle of friends, family and co-workers includes: Danny, Kate's fiance; Stella, a PR maven and Kate's boss; Ryan, Michael's ex; and Michael's mother, Annie, a recovering alcoholic trying to reconnect with her son. In the series opener, "Like I Always Wanted," Kate accompanies Michael on a trip to Seattle for a bookstore signing event. But when Michael learns the big secret Kate's been keeping from him it leads to unexpected trouble with airport security. Then, in the second episode, "Who We Are," Kate's boss asks her to fill a spot in a Disabilities in Media panel and she must decide whether to confront her tokenization or play along. Michael's ex-BF Ryan shows up unannounced to dinner. Based on a series of shorts that was featured at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival's Short Form Episodic Showcase, THIS CLOSE is the first straight-to-series order for Sundance Now, which released the first two episodes on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. Plus, Sundance Now also released NOW THE DISCUSSION: THIS CLOSE, a 20-minute companion series during which hosts Castille, Blake V, Karma McCain and Michael Litchfield -- as well as members of the cast and crew of THIS CLOSE -- discuss the series.
