Plot Synopsis

Hosted by food expert Damaris Phillips and NASCAR personality Rutledge Wood, SOUTHERN AND HUNGRY is a half-hour series that takes viewers on a mouthwatering road trip through America's South to visit the down-home food spots the duo love. From legendary whole hog barbecue in Charleston, South Carolina and delectable shrimp and grits in Savannah, Georgia to Southern staples fused with Asian flavors in Damaris' hometown Louisville, Kentucky, the two friends explore the most memorable dishes and restaurants that bring them back to their childhood. In the first episode, Damaris and Rutledge sop up the sauce in Charleston, South Carolina as they discover the pleasures of whole hog barbecue with legendary pit master Rodney Scott. Then they are on to one of the best burgers in America, where the meats are butchered in-house at the Neon Pig in Oxford, Mississippi. Finally, it's a feel-good lesson in down-home cooking with fall-off-the-bone oxtail at Addielee's Restaurant in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Upcoming episodes visit Savannah, Georgia; Memphis, Tennessee; and Louisville, Kentucky. On Monday, July 30, 2018 at 9pm ET/6pm PT, Cooking Channel premiered the second season of SOUTHERN AND HUNGRY. In the season opener, "The Dish on Charlotte," Damaris and Rutledge get their southern food tour rolling in a growing city with an emerging food scene rooted in tradition -- Charlotte, North Carolina! Their first stop is at Brooks' Sandwich House -- a roadside shack that's remained in the family for 45 years -- famous for burgers smothered in their signature secret chili recipe. Next, Damaris and Rutledge are in for a fried food flavor overload with Steak and Shrimp Hibachi Fries and House-Made Tots from What The Fries food truck. Their Charlotte food expedition wraps up at an amazing up-and-coming southern barbecue joint called Seoul Food Meat Company known for their creamy Ramen Mac and Cheese and mind-blowing Asian barbecue ribs. In subsequent Season 2 episodes, Damaris and Rutledge travel to Asheville, NC; Chattanooga, TN; Knoxville, TN; Auburn, AL; Birmingham, AL; Biloxi, MS; and Lafayette, LA.

Rutledge and Damaris find themselves in the unofficial Cajun capital of the south -- the French Louisiana region of Acadiana in Lafayette, Louisiana. Their first stop is Cafe Vermilionville for their New Orleans-inspired Crawfish 'Beignets' and Turtle Soup. Next, it's off to roadside stop Best Stop Boudin for their Boudin Blanc, Boudin Balls and fan-favorite Cracklins. Finally, a Cajun tour can't end without gumbo so Rut and Damaris sample three-time World Champion gumbo complete with live music at Prejeans.
