Plot Synopsis

After getting the call to go from soul singer to soul saver, Reverend Boyce 'The Voice' Ballentine, an R&B superstar-turned-minister with the 1980s hit song "Sex Wichoo," relocates from Las Vegas to St. Louis with his family to preach in his father's church. His family -- wife Lolli and daughter Lyric -- is not exactly eager to give up the fabulous superstar life of Vegas for a humble one in the Midwest. Boyce soon hires his father, Barton, as a senior advisor at the church -- but quickly regrets the offer. Plus, Boyce's younger brother Stamps, who has no job or direction, helps the family adjust -- he even gives Lyric driving lessons. The Reverend Boyce character originally appeared in a Season 2 episode of HOT IN CLEVELAND and a spinoff was developed by Cedric and HOT IN CLEVELAND creator Suzanne Martin. Guest stars for the first season include: Tamar and Trina Braxton, who are Rose and Catherine Pinkney, sisters who audition for the church choir only to find out that they are both dating Stamps; Anthony Anderson, who portrays Sweet Brown, Boyce's old music-writing partner; Sherri Shepherd playing Sherie, Lolli's cousin, who is always up to no good; Robert Forster as Father Ignatius, the head of a St. Louis clergy organization that seems to closely resemble the mob; and Kim Coles as Wanda, a church-going woman who stops by Lolli's salon hoping to get a special shampoo that all the ladies are raving about. Guest stars for Season 2, which premiered on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 11pm ET/PT included Kellee Stewart and Kim Wayans. On Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 10:30pm ET (live)/PT (tape), TV Land, BET, and Centric broadcast live simulcasts of the Season 3 premiere of THE SOUL MAN with guest stars Brandy, Martin Lawrence and a musical performance by B.O.B. In the season opener, Boyce works to put on a live concert to save the church's summer camp when he hears it might close down. Plus, Betty White guest starred in this episode in a cross-over event that featured Cedric the Entertainer appearing in the Season 5 premiere of HOT IN CLEVELAND at 10pm ET/PT the same night. Additional guest stars in Season 3 of THE SOUL MAN include David Alan Grier, Owen Benjamin, Jazz Raycole, and more. THE SOUL MAN returned for its fourth season on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:30pm ET/PT on TV Land with Sherri Shepherd guest starring in the show's live season opener. Shepherd will appear in 10 of the season's 12 episodes as Nikki, Boyce's unruly cousin who always has a few tricks up her sleeve. In the season opener, "Oh Snow You Didn't," a blizzard traps Boyce and Lolli in the house with Stamps, Barton and Beyonce's cousin Nikki -- and when supplies dwindle, tempers rise. THE SOUL MAN returned for its fifth and final 12-episode season on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 10:30pm ET/PT on TV Land. This season, Boyce sets out on a campaign trail to run for Mayor with his sassy and supportive wife, Lolli, by his side, while his brother Stamps, who is still trying to figure out life, attempts to help him campaign the best way he knows how. Boyce's father, Barton, is still holding the reigns to the church, while Boyce's campaign is run by his overly-aggressive but "not quite all there" campaign manager, Alicia. In the season opener, "Rev. Run," Boyce uncovers larger issues within the city government that prompt him to enter the mayoral race. Lolli's eyesight is failing, but she fears glasses could mean the end of her 'healthy relationship' with Boyce.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 10:30pm ET/PT, TV Land premiered the series finale of THE SOUL MAN. In the series ender, "Boyce Don't Cry," it's Election Day and Boyce is overwhelmed by the effect his campaign has had on the family -- Barton is still in the hospital, Stamps is moving, and Boyce still needs to win the most important vote of all: Lolli's.
