Plot Synopsis

Based on Cassandra Clare's young adult fantasy book series, "The Mortal Instruments," SHADOWHUNTERS follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters -- human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother, Jocelyn, is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold. Nothing is as it seems, including her close family friend Luke, who knows more than he is letting on, as well as the enigmatic warlock Magnus Bane, who could hold the key to unlocking Clary's past. Then, with the knowledge that Valentine is alive and on the hunt for The Mortal Cup, the Institute is on high alert. Not wasting any time, Jace jumps into action and figures Clary's memories are the key to finding Jocelyn and The Mortal Cup. Unfortunately, Clary's memories were wiped leaving her without any recollection of this other life that could help her and the team. With only one other option remaining, Jace, Isabelle and a very reluctant Alec take Clary to the City of Bones to face the powerful Silent Brothers. SHADOWHUNTERS premiered the same day that ABC Family changed its name to Freeform. One month earlier -- on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at 9:30pm ET/PT -- ABC Family premiered "Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters," a half-hour special that gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the television series, which includes the cast revealing how they landed their roles and a look at how the cast got into fighting shape. And for viewers who are new to the Shadow World, the cast explains what SHADOWHUNTERS is all about. The special also includes interviews with cast members Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Harry Shum, Jr., Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia and Isaiah Mustafa, as well as showrunner Ed Decter and executive producer McG. On Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT, Freeform premiered the Season 1 finale of SHADOWHUNTERS. In the season ender, "Morning Star," Jace, who is still reeling from everything that has happened, makes hunting down Valentine his number one priority even though he continues to wrestle with his conflicted feelings. In hopes of finding a way to stop Valentine before it is too late, Clary and Simon must find the key to unlocking Jocelyn's coma. But that key to unlocking Jocelyn's spell may just undo the Downworlder peace treaty, Simon's relationship with Raphael, and the Vampire clan in the process. Meanwhile, Alec must deal with the aftermath of his decision and what his choice means for his future.

SHADOWHUNTERS returned for a second season on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform. In the season premiere, the Shadow World is in upheaval as Valentine and The Circle continue to grow stronger by the minute, while the Shadowhunter team quickly becomes disillusioned with The Clave and their reaction to the recent events. Loyalties will be tested, unlikely bonds will be made and relationships will be pushed to the limit as the Shadowhunters and their Downworlder friends make their way in a new world. SHADOWHUNTERS returned for the second half of Season 2 on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform, with Shadowhunters and Downworlders reeling from what happened at the New York Institute in the winter finale. As the rift between the two sides grows larger, the team and their Downworld friends and lovers are put in the middle of the dangerous divide. Torn between the Clave's rules and what they feel is right, Clary, Jace, Alec and Isabelle struggle to help forge a new beginning. Relationships will be tested, a new Shadowhunter named Sebastian will join the fray and the Seelie Queen will step out of the shadows in the summer season.

On Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT, Freeform premiered the third season of SHADOWHUNTERS. In the season opener, "On Infernal Ground," secrets abound as the Shadowhunters and Downworlders try to get back to normal after Valentine's death. Clary struggles with keeping her secret about Raziel's wish, while Alec pushes Jace to come clean about whatever Jace and Clary are hiding. Luke must use tough love to keep his secret hidden from Ollie who is on the warpath for answers. Magnus hides his true feelings about his new position in the Warlock community from Alec. Meanwhile, Lilith sets a plan in motion in New York City as Simon spends time in the Seelie Court. After a nine-month break, SHADOWHUNTERS returned with new episodes on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform. In the mid-season premiere, "Lost Souls," everyone is dealing with the loss of Clary and are trying to move on best they can. Unbeknownst to them, the Shadowhunters face a new level of evil that they can't even imagine with the arrival of Jonathan Morgenstern (Luke Baines), the true form of Clary's brother. With the loss of Clary after Lilith's apartment exploded, Alec, Isabelle and Jace try to come to terms with what has happened. Glad to have their brother back, Alec and Isabelle are still worried about Jace, who is taking the actions of The Owl very hard. Magnus is also mourning the loss of his magic and finds himself in a new position -- having to rely on others for help. Meanwhile, Maia tries to help a devastated Simon who has lost his family and his best friend. But unknown to everyone, Clary is alive and finds herself in a new and dangerous predicament.
