Plot Synopsis

"Brave New Voices" shows the trials, tribulations and triumphs of poets and coaches on their journey to the 2008 Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, D.C. This series highlights teams from New York, San Francisco, Ft. Lauderdale, Ann Arbor, Hawaii and Philadelphia and features a few individuals, including: 19-year old Brooklynite B. Yung, who sees poetry as a way out of the streets, but has a hard time with team practice; Britney, an 18-year-old New Yorker with cerebral palsy and a fierce desire to be heard; Jasmine, the 18-year-old leader of the Ft. Lauderdale team, who is held back by sickle-cell disease that lands her in the hospital; Ericka, a 16-year-old San Francisco resident who seeks refuge from her tough upbringing through overeating and poetry, and might still be too green.
