Plot Synopsis

Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are complete opposites and good friends who solve crimes, busting some of Boston's most notorious criminals. Growing up at opposite ends of the economic spectrum, the two remain strikingly different from one another. Jane, the only female detective in Boston's homicide division, is a tough and gutsy cop who doesn't let her guard down, dodges her overprotective mother Angela and is better at basketball than her brother, Frankie Jr. Maura, meanwhile, is usually more comfortable among the dead than the living. She is always impeccably dressed in designer duds with a steady, sometimes icy temperament. And she is working on curbing her tendency to diagnose the people she meets -- including her first dates. Jane and Maura often find themselves working together as both use their brilliant minds and expertise to solve Boston's most complex cases. In the Season 2 finale, Jane shot Maura's biological father, gangster Paddy Doyle, when he unexpectedly appeared at a secret undercover operation to protect Maura from a deadly assailant, but the scene quickly got out of control, forcing Jane to shoot Paddy. Then, with a deep wedge driven between these two friends, they tried to understand and justify their reactions, while being surprised by an internal affairs investigation, which pushed their friendship even closer to the breaking point throughout. When Season 3 ended, Jane tried to convince Casey not to go through with a potentially life threatening surgery, while Maura decided to anonymously donate her kidney to save a half-sister she barely knows, Cailin. Meanwhile, Tommy and Det. Barry Frost were trapped during a building collapse. Now, in Season 4, Jane and Maura help each other through more family troubles as they investigate complex and troublesome cases, including a deadly shooting of a state senator, the brutal killing of an young and earnest journalism student and the pending murder trial of Maura's mob-boss father, Paddy Doyle. Season 4 premiered on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT on TNT. On Tuesday, June 17, 2014, TNT aired the Season 5 premiere at 9pm ET/PT. In the season opener, Maura and Frankie face the aftermath of their kiss at the end of the previous season. Plus, Jane attempts to hide her pregnancy from her snooping mother, while she solves the murder of a jogger, which takes on even greater urgency when Jane realizes that the motive was theft...of the woman's baby. Then, in the season's second episode, "Goodbye," the team deals with the loss of their close friend, Det. Barry Frost, played by Lee Thompson Young to whom the series pays a final tribute. RIZZOLI & ISLES returned for the second half of its fifth season on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on TNT. In the Season 5 Winter premiere, "Bridge to Tomorrow," after Jane jumps from a bridge to save a prosecutor suspected of his murdering his mistress, Maura is terrified that she has lost her best friend. The squad must now renew the search to find the real killer. Meanwhile, Angela enlists Frankie's help as she applies to new jobs. The 18-episode sixth season of RIZZOLI & ISLES premiered on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on TNT, immediately following an all-day marathon (3am-9pm) of the entire fifth season. In the Season 6 opener, "The Platform," the team must fight to find the real killer while clearing their detective's name when it appears one of their own shot an unarmed man on a busy Boston subway platform. But with Internal Affairs breathing down their necks, it becomes clear that the circumstances surrounding this shooting are anything but clear. The seventh and finale season of RIZZOLI & ISLES premiered on Monday, June 6, 2016 from 9-11pm ET/PT, as TNT debuted back-to-back new episodes. In the season opener (9pm), "Two Shots: Move Forward," the team must use every tool at its disposal in the aftermath of a shooting, as they try to find Alice Sands and bring her to justice before she destroys Jane's life. Then, in the night's second new episode (10pm), "Dangerous Curve Ahead," while the entire Boston Police Department searches for Alice Sands, the team investigates a car crash that isn't all it seems. In the midst of this, a new romance blossoms. Five months earlier -- on Thursday, January 7, 2016 -- TNT announced that RIZZOLI & ISLES will end after its 13-episode seventh season

On Monday, September 5, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT, TNT premiered the series finale of RIZZOLI & ISLES, immediately following a 12-hour marathon (9am-9pm) of encore episodes. In the series ender, "Ocean Frank," the facts don't add up when a dead man is found handcuffed in his home. As the Bon Voyage party approaches, everyone makes a video to say goodbye, everyone says farewell and plans for their next adventure.
