Plot Synopsis

Told through the eyes of a group of teenagers who meet as patients in the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles, RED BAND SOCIETY explores with dark humor the daily life of this group of teens who become unlikely friends. The pediatric ward is run by Nurse Jackson, a caregiver with a take-no-prisoners approach to getting these kids through the most difficult part of their lives. One of her patients, insightful and mischievous 12-year-old Charlie, has been in a coma for a year because of an accident, and he is the show's narrator. Charlie's friends and fellow patients include: 16-year-old Jordi Palacios, a very smart and resourceful young man, who illegally crossed the Mexican border into California to seek out treatment and refuses to take 'No' for an answer; 16-year-old Leo Roth, the leader of the group of teens, who has osteosarcoma and is starting to lose his way after living in the hospital for a year -- and now he's angry about being forced to room with Jordi; Leo's best friend, 16-year-old Dash Hosney, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and is determined to live every day as if it's his last; Leo's on-again-off-again girlfriend, 15-year-old Emma Chota, a beautiful patient who struggles with anorexia; and Kara Souders, a 16-year-old cheerleader and mean girl, who shares a room with Charlie after being brought in with heart failure when he passed out in practice. In the pediatrics ward, Dr. Jack McAndrew, a rock-star pediatric oncologist and surgeon, oversees much of the treatment, while trying not to get attached to his young patients. Also attending to the patients is the naive and gullible Nurse Brittany Dobler, a new hire on the pediatric ward, who allows the kids to get away with things they probably shouldn't. Although many young patients who are seriously will make complete recoveries, that day seems a long way off for these teens. And as they confront questions of life and death which no one at that age should have to face, a kinship based on these shared experiences is represented by the red hospital bands issued to them upon admittance. RED BAND SOCIETY, based on the Spanish TV series POLSERES VERMELLES, is executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Mandy Moore has been cast in the recurring role of Chief of Staff Dr. Erin Grace, the ex-fiance of Dr. McAndrew. In the mid-season finale, Emma goes home and learns a secret that throws her into a tailspin, as Jordi debates breaking the law to get what he wants. Meanwhile, betrayal abounds as Leo and Kara hit the road and leave Ocean Park Hospital. Then, Hunter receives the news he has been waiting for and approaches a life-altering medical procedure with Dash by his side. Also, love is in the air as Nurse Jackson and Dr. Naday try to get Charlie to respond.
