Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by Greg Berlanti, PRODIGAL SON is a one-hour drama series that centers on Malcolm Bright, a young profiler whose father was "The Surgeon," one of the worst notorious, serial killers in the 1990s. So it makes sense Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He uses his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son, and his own constantly evolving neuroses. Malcolm's happy family includes: Dr. Martin Whitly, who is intelligent, wealthy, and charismatic -- and also happens to be a predatory sociopath who killed at least 23 people; Bright's mother, Jessica Whitly, is an elegant and WASPy New Yorker, who wields sarcasm like a samurai sword and has an opinion on every aspect of Bright's life; and sister Ainsley Whitley, his only ally and TV journalist, who wishes her brother would "take a break from murder" and have a normal life. Unfortunately for his sister, the only way Bright feels normal is by solving cases with the help of his longtime mentor, NYPD Detective Gil Arroyo. Bright jumps at the chance to help Arroyo solve a quadruple homicide for the NYPD. As Bright slips into the mind of this serial killer, he finds himself dealing with the repercussions of seeing his father for the first time in years. Tormented by the terrors of his childhood, Bright is faced with a question: are his dreams just nightmares or did they actually happen? Arroyo's one of the best detectives around, and he expects no less from his team: Detective Dani Powell, a headstrong no-nonsense cop who quickly becomes impressed with Bright's work; and Detective JT Tarmel, a born-and-bred New Yorker who questions whether Bright is a psychopath himself.

On Tuesday January 12, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT, FOX premiered the second season of PRODIGAL SON. Season 2 picks up with Malcolm Bright's personal life in disarray after the shocking actions of his sister, Ainsley, in the Season 1 finale. Now, he must "take care" of her and protect his mother, Jessica Whitly, from a secret that could tear the family apart all over again. Further complicating matters, Martin seeks to deepen his relationship with Bright, his "prodigal son," but forging this bond leads to shocking twists and revelations. In the season opener, "It's All In The Execution," Bright finds his personal life in disarray after his sister's shocking actions in the Season 1 finale. Now, he has to "take care" of her and protect his mother, Jessica, from a secret that could tear the family apart all over again. To distract himself, Malcolm takes on a new case and must find the killer behind a recent beheading in the city... and the only person he can turn to for help with the case is his father. Meanwhile, Martin returns to Claremont to a surprise new roommate (guest star Michael Chernus) and JT faces discrimination while on the job.
