Plot Synopsis

Each year since 1992, players have annually honored the best Major League Baseball (MLB) talent, as the players themselves recognize their peers' most outstanding and inspiring performances. Each of the winners designates the charity of his choice to receive a grant from the Major League Baseball Players Trust, which has contributed more than $4 million to charities around the world as part of this award. The first year, Major Leaguers selected Dennis Eckersley and Barry Bonds as the AL & NL Outstanding Players, respectively. Today, the players annually honor the outstanding player, rookie, pitcher and comeback player in each league, while the Player of the Year and Man of the Year awards bestow top honors without regard to league. MLB Network has exclusively televised the PLAYERS CHOICE AWARDS since 2011. Prior to that, winners were announced in a series of segments on ESPN Radio (2009-2010) and webisodes on Yahoo! Sports (2007-2008).
On Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 8-9:30pm ET/5-6:30pm PT on MLB Network, MLB players announced the winners of the PLAYERS CHOICE AWARDS in a one-hour program hosted by Greg Amsinger, Cliff Floyd and Kelly Nash. Vying for top honor as 2016 Player of the Year are Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros, along with Mookie Betts and David Ortiz, both of the Boston Red Sox. Leading the voting for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award, named in honor of the MLBPA's first executive director and given annually to the player who inspires others to higher levels of achievement by his on-field performances and contributions to his community, are Curtis Granderson of the New York Mets, Anthony Rizzo of the Chicago Cubs and Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
