Plot Synopsis

In this series of half-hour specials, "The New York Times" sports journalist Bill Rhoden sits down for up-close and intimate conversations with athletes, as they discuss cultural and political issues as well as the world of sports. In the premiere of PERSONAL WITH BILL RHODEN, Rhoden talked with NFL Hall-of-Famer Calvin Hill and his son, recently retired NBA superstar Grant Hill. In an interview recorded one month earlier in Atlanta, the father-son duo touched on many of the current topics in American sports -- from the Donald Sterling situation and race relations to the changing views and acceptance of the LGBT community and the on-going issues professional athletes and men of color face in society today. Grant talked frankly about his dealing with Sterling and the challenges of being a professional athlete today, while Calvin gave his unique perspective on the same issues from the vantage point of both a parent and a legendary star in the NFL.
