Plot Synopsis

On July 29, 1948, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games, Dr. Guttmann organised the first competition for wheelchair athletes which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games, a milestone in Paralympic history. In 1976 the first Winter Games in Paralympics history were held in Sweden, and as with the Summer Games, have taken place every four years, and include a Paralympics Opening Ceremony and Paralympics Closing Ceremony. Since the Summer Games of Seoul, Korea in 1988 and the Winter Games in Albertville, France in 1992 the Games have also taken part in the same cities and venues as the Olympics.

The Opening Ceremony for the 2014 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES aired live on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11am ET/8am PT on NBCSN. Chris Waddell, who won 12 medals in sit-skiing over four Paralympic Winter Games and was inducted into the U.S. Paralympic Hall of Fame as well as the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, hosted the Opening Ceremony live alongside Steve Schlanger. NBC aired a one-hour encore presentation of the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1pm ET/PT. During the subsequent nine days, NBCSN and NBC presented an unprecedented 52 hours of coverage of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games with 13 commentators, including seven veteran Olympic commentators and four Paralympians who have competed in 16 Paralympic Games. The team covered all five Paralympic winter sports -- alpine skiing (which includes snowboarding), cross-country skiing, biathlon, wheelchair curling and sled hockey -- across NBC, NBCSN and TeamUSA.org. The Closing Ceremony for the 2014 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES aired live on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 3:30pm ET/12:30pm PT on NBCSN.

The 2022 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES in Beijing will run March 4-13 and see Para athletes competing in 78 events across six Para sports: 39 for men, 35 for women and four mixed events. The Winter Paralympics will be held over five venues in the three competition zones of central Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Two of these venues -- the National Indoor Stadium (Para Ice Hockey) and the National Aquatic Centre (Wheelchair Curling) -- are legacy venues from the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics. "Together for a Shared Future" is the official motto of Beijing 2022.

The Opening Ceremony aired live on Friday, March 4, 2022 from 7-9am ET/4-6am PT on USA Network and Peacock, with coverage of events starting later that night from 9pm-3am on USA Network and Peacock.

Coverage includes three hours on NBC primetime, a first for the Winter Paralympics, among seven total hours on NBC. NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app will add comprehensive live streaming, including TV coverage and additional live event coverage. All events and competition will also stream on Peacock.

The Closing Ceremony will be live on Sunday, March 13 from 7:30-10am ET/4:30-7am PT on USA Network and Peacock.
