Plot Synopsis

Hosted by Will Smith and executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and award-winning producer Jane Root, ONE STRANGE ROCK is a 10-episode event series that explores the fragility and wonder of planet Earth -- one of the most peculiar, unique places in the entire universe. It's the extraordinary story of why life as we know it exists on Earth, brought into perspective by the only people to have left it behind: an elite group of astronauts including Chris Hadfield, Jeff Hoffman, Mae Jemison, Jerry Linenger, Mike Massimino, Leland Melvin, Nicole Stott, and Peggy Whitson. Having filmed in 45 countries, on six continents and from outer space on the ISS, ONE STRANGE ROCK takes cameras where they've never been before, guiding viewers through the vulnerable, tiny speck of a planet among the vast, harsh cosmic arena, revealing the magical twists of fate that have allowed life to emerge, survive and thrive only on Earth.

The series opener, "Gasp," features astronaut host Chris Hadfield. For those privileged few who have seen Earth from space, the very first thing they notice is the thin blue line of atmosphere that clings to our planet and sustains life. How our planet creates and regulates that oxygen is a mind-blowing story involving a flying river, a global dust storm, collapsing glaciers and the most important creature you've never heard of. It's an incredible chain of connections that reveal just how truly wondrous our home is. Everything connects, so life and planet breathe together.
