Plot Synopsis

NY MED follows the surgeons and staff at hospitals in New York and New Jersey. This series takes a candid look at how cutting edge medicine often makes the difference, although even the best surgeons can find themselves flirting with disaster. Plus, these doctors spend far more time with each other than with their families, developing complicated and intertwined personal relationships. But even with the best trained surgeons, things go awry. For instance, a former Army officer goes into the operating room for a heart transplant, but wakes up to learn that the heart he has been waiting for was irreparably damaged during removal. Season 1 features three New York City hospitals -- Weill Cornell Medical Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center and Brooklyn's Lutheran Medical Center -- as the doctors and nurses treat patients by relying on medical brilliance, a strong rapport with their patients, and a healthy dose of old fashioned good luck. Some of the doctors featured in Season 1 include: Dr. Mehmet Oz, the famous talk-show host, who remains a world-class heart surgeon and offers his lucky patients a one-stop shop of surgery, lifestyle counseling and compassion; Dr. Anthony Watkins, an African-American from the deep South, who is acutely aware of his minority status and feels the burden to be a role model for other young African-Americans; and Dr. Tomoaki Kato, a maverick Japanese surgeon, who believes he can us an innovative operation called "ex vivo" to help a Wall Street banker with a grapefruit-size tumor in her stomach. On Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10pm, Discovery Fit & Health aired NY ER, which was a series of 30-minute programs using footage from two hospitals shown NY MED: New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Brooklyn's Lutheran Medical Center. NY MED returned for its second season on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC. After nearly two years of production, Season 2 toggles between the orderly operating rooms of Manhattan's New York-Presbyterian Hospital -- the primary venue for the series -- and the sometimes hectic trauma wards of Newark's University Hospital. Marina, Diana and Katie--the ER's compassionate, competent and sometimes hilarious nurses from the first season of NY MED -- return. They confront everything from subway tragedies to romantic suitors feigning medical syndromes. In the first episode, they treat a young woman with a bizarre injury that leaves the staff both baffled and impressed. Dr. Oz also returns, and in the season opener, he stops to chat with 27-year old Juan Vasquez who has come to the ER with discomfort in his chest. In a blood-chilling instant, Juan convulses in agony and the look in Oz's eyes is unmistakable. This is a life-threatening crisis. Oz believes the man's aorta has ripped from his chest down to the main artery in his leg. Every second counts and Oz knows he must make perfect decisions in exactly the right order if this young man's life can be saved.
