Plot Synopsis

Based on the movie of the same name, MYSTERY ROAD is a true-crime anthology series that centers on Jay Swan, the gruff yet sharp Indigenous homicide police detective, who works with local police and detectives. Season 1 opens with a truck being found abandoned in an outback cattle station, where Senior Sergeant Emma James calls in Swan to investigate what happened to Marley, the driver. CCTV footage shows that Marley was with Reese, a backpacker recently fired from the station, who is also missing. Set in the remote Outback and featuring Indigenous storylines, MYSTERY ROAD had its U.S. premiere on Monday, August 20, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT on Acorn TV.

On Monday, October 12, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Acorn TV presented the US premiere of MYSTERY ROAD's second season, releasing the first two episodes. Swan arrives in the coastal town of Gideon, where he investigates a grisly case that may unearth a drug trafficking ring. Also, he faces obstruction from a visiting ambitious Swedish archaeologist who has set up a survey site to uncover Indigenous cultural artifacts, but is confronted by protesters in the local community who do not want her digging up their land to rewrite their history. In this small community where the desert meets the ocean, Swan must expose the web of corruption plaguing the town as the body count rises. Many timely Indigenous issues feature in the plots, including the perceived mistreatment of the natives by police and the attempted return of human remains dug up during scientific expeditions to its descendants for reburial. Acorn TV releases a new episode each Monday through November 9.
