Plot Synopsis

In this three-part special, three men take six weeks to navigate the 2,300-mile Mighty Mississippi -- from the headwaters all the way to the Gulf. Along the way they stop to understand the history, wildlife and future of the river, the cities along its banks, and its people. Scientist and ex-Marine Marcus Eriksen, professional angler Stephen Browning, and filmmaker Bill Bowles use a variety of vessels -- everything from kayaks to pontoon boats -- as they endure storms, unpredictable waters, four-to-six foot high waves created by barges, runaway logs that could punch giant holes in their boat at any time, and even a hurricane.
