Plot Synopsis

This one-hour drama follows Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. Within the Bureau, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. Jane's role in cracking a series of tough high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents. However, no-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon openly resists having Jane in her unit and alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Jane's usefulness and blasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous lack of boundaries. Lisbon's team includes agents Kimball Cho, Wayne Rigsby and newer member Grace Van Pelt, who all think Jane's a loose cannon but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases. Season 4 ended with Jane revealing his breakdown was a long con to trap Red John, but his plan was derailed after Red John's FBI friend discovered the ruse. Jane thought he was in a limo with Red John, who informed Lorelei, a Vegas cocktail waitress that hooked up with Jane, to cut off two of Jane's fingers before leaving. When the FBI intervened, they opened the limo door to find the dead body of Luther Wainwright instead of Red John. Season 5 opened with Jane trying to decipher Lorelei's connection to Red John, continuing the interrogation that ended during the previous season's finale. Jane continued to search for Red John, narrowing down a list of suspects to 408 names by midseason, but the investigation was going to slowly for Lorelei, who took matters into her own hands and tried to hunt down Red John herself -- with fatal consequences. By the end of Season 5, Jane narrowed down the list of Red John suspects to seven, just as his nemesis killed someone with connections to Jane's past. THE MENTALIST returned for its sixth season on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 10pm ET/PT. The season opened with Jane and Lisbon secretly continuing their dangerous mission to narrow down the list of seven Red John suspects, as they investigated the murder of a man who was missing for two years. After discovering an important clue about Red John's methods, the team encounters one of the four remaining suspects. And just as Jane begins to focus on one suspect in the October 13th episode, it's time for Rigsby and Van Pelt to tie the knot. The seventh and final season of THE MENTALIST premiered on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 9:30pm ET/9pm PT, with CBS airing new episodes for five weeks throughout December, and then the series moved to Wednesdays at 8pm starting January 7, 2015. In the season opener, "Nothing But Blue Skies," Jane and Lisbon decide to keep their new relationship a secret from their colleagues as they investigate the murder of an undercover agent. Also, young, ambitious agent Michelle Vega joins the team.

On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 8-10pm ET/PT, CBS premiered the final two episodes of THE MENTALIST. In the show's penultimate episode, "Brown Shag Carpet," Jane agrees to once again pretend to be a renowned psychic and be used as bait in an attempt to lure out a serial killer and give the FBI a chance to apprehend him. Then, in the series ender, "White Orchids," Lisbon accepts Jane's surprise marriage proposal, but a killer's quest for revenge may cost them the happy ending they've worked so hard to achieve. Original cast members Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti return for the series finale.
