Plot Synopsis

I AM JAZZ is a one-hour reality series that follows Jazz Jennings who has the life of a typical teenage girl living in South Florida -- balancing school, sports, family, and more -- with one difference: when she was born everyone assumed she was a boy, but as soon as she could talk, she let her family know that she was really a girl. Beginning her transition at the age of five, Jazz is now a 14-year-old girl, preparing to enter high school. Living as a transgender teen comes with a unique perspective and some unexpected day-to-day experiences, but Jazz is surrounded by her loving family and friends. Joining Jazz are her parents, Greg and Jeanette, who have always supported Jazz, but now worry about what's next as Jazz enters adolescence. Jazz's siblings -- sister Ari and twin brothers Griffen & Sander -- stand by their little sister and guide her as she enters her teenage years. In this series, Jazz prepares to start her new school in the fall, faces decisions regarding her health, has to choose between her passion for soccer and spending more time with friends, and navigates entering the dating world. Plus, Jazz devotes her time to being a transgender advocate, sharing her story with people across the country in an effort to educate and inspire others. ALL THAT JAZZ debuted as a one-hour special, "I Am Jazz: A Family in Transition," on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 9pm ET/PT, moving to sister network TLC for its series premiere almost four years later on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT.

The eight-episode second season of I AM JAZZ premiered on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on TLC, and earlier in the day the cable network broadcast a six-hour marathon (6am-Noon) of encore episodes. Season 2 continues to follow the life of 15-year-old Jazz as she balances school, sports, family, and more, documenting her triumphs and struggles from the perspective of a transgender teen. Returning with Jazz are her parents Greg and Jeanette, who have always supported Jazz. Her siblings, sister Ari, and twin brothers Griffen & Sander, who stand by her side and support Jazz as she continues through her teenage years. In the season opener, "The Hate Is Real," Jazz learns she needs surgery to avoid male puberty. Jeanette and Jazz decide to confront an anti-trans group that has been targeting the family, resulting in a heated public encounter. The family receives a threatening phone call.

Season 3 of I AM JAZZ premiered on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, and then moved to its regular timeslot -- Wednesdays at 9pm -- the following day. The new season follows 16-year-old Jazz, who is now at the crossroads of making the biggest decision of her life. As she looks to move forward with gender confirmation surgery, the decision is made more complicated with the news that her surgical options are more limited than previously thought. In addition to the drama and angst that comes with being a teenager, Jazz faces an increasingly hostile world of discrimination, hate speech, online bullying and an array of misconceptions associated with what it means to be transgender. Though a difficult road lies ahead, Jazz has the unwavering support of her parents, siblings and friends. In the season opener, "Bottoms Up," Jazz tells her parents she wants to have gender confirmation surgery before she completes high school, but learns there may be obstacles along the way. Jeanette struggles with the reality of the twins going off to college.

On Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT, TLC premiered the fourth season of I AM JAZZ. The series continues to chronicle the journey of Jazz as she faces the typical struggles of a junior in high school including issues with dating, body image and social anxiety. She also faces the unique and unexpected challenge of having to lose 30 pounds in order to move forward with her gender confirmation surgery. After choosing the ideal surgeon, Jazz learns that she may not be able to get the standard confirmation surgery she was previously promised. This new development sets in motion a series of obstacles that might prove to be the most difficult Jazz has ever experienced. Jazz will need to rely on her friends and family more than ever through this most challenging of times. In the season opener, "Winds of Change," a new Jazz emerges, eager to expand her social circle and explore dating. But Jazz is also hiding a dark secret from her family that may come out to haunt her. Later, Hurricane Irma makes landfall in Florida, threatening the safety of the Jennings family.

Season 5 of I AM JAZZ premiered on New Year's Day 2019 (Tuesday, January 1) at 10pm ET/PT on TLC. Twelve years ago, at the age of five, Jazz started her transition to becoming the girl that she has always been, and she dreamed that one day her inner and outer self would be in alignment. This season, that dream becomes a reality and viewers are there every step of the way as Jazz prepares for and experiences the biggest, most personal event of her life: gender confirmation surgery. Throughout the season, fans witness other major milestones, including Jazz attending her first prom and celebrating her 18th birthday, while continuing to navigate life's ups and downs alongside her close-knit and supportive family. In the season opener, "The Final Countdown," Jazz prepares for a final weigh-in for her gender confirmation surgery. Meanwhile, Dr. Bowers shocks Greg and Jeannette with changes to the surgical plan. Jazz and her friends head out for a night of fun at prom, but it turns into a nightmare. I AM JAZZ moves to its regular timeslot -- Tuesdays at 9pm -- beginning January 22.

I AM JAZZ returned for its sixth season on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT on TLC. This season, Jazz allows cameras to document the biggest, most personal event of her life: another procedure related to the gender affirmation surgery that viewers followed last season. Meanwhile, her day-to-day life isn't slowing down either as she maneuvers through her senior year of high school. After nervously awaiting her college admissions letters, Jazz must make a difficult decision between attending the elite Harvard University or faraway Pomona College; plus, as the valedictorian of her class and with graduation fast approaching, she is confronted with the pressure of writing a highly anticipated speech. Viewers also follow along this season as Jazz navigates her post-breakup relationship and takes on planning a massive fundraising event to help her friend Noelle raise money for her own gender affirmation surgery, throwing a drag show that will feature her friends and family.
On Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 9-11pm ET/PT, TLC premiered "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," the two-hour Season 6 finale of I AM JAZZ. Jazz seeks emotional wellbeing at a spiritual retreat while Greg and Jeanette seek relief from their concern over Jazz. Although still short $5K of her financial goal of $25K, Noelle moves forward with her gender affirmation surgery.
