Plot Synopsis

THE HOLLOW CROWN presents adaptations of four of William Shakespeare history plays: Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; and Henry V. This tetralogy, often called the "Henriad" or viewed as part Shakespeare's five-part "An Age of Kings," covers the time period from the late 1390s through the 1420s in England, starting with young King Richard II facing a rebellion led by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, who, as King Henry IV, is later threatened by another rebellion. Prince Hal, the future Henry V, joined him to defeat the rebels, but the plot continued, with Falstaff hoping for high office. When Henry V settled on the throne, he then faced another challenge -- this time from outside the country, as France threatened. On four consecutive Fridays -- from September 20 through October 11, 2013 -- PBS aired the U.S. premiere of this series as part of its GREAT PERFORMANCES program.
