Plot Synopsis

GOTHAM is an origin story of DC Comics' Batman, super-villains and vigilantes, following the rise of Detective James Gordon through a dangerously corrupt Gotham City teetering on the edge of evil. Growing up in the surrounding suburbs, Gordon romanticized the big city as a glamorous and exciting metropolis where his late father once served as a successful district attorney. Now, two weeks into his new job as a Gotham City detective and engaged to his beloved fiancee, Barbara, Gordon is living his dream -- even as he hopes to restore the city back to the pure version he remembers it was as a kid. The newly-minted detective is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock, as the two stumble upon the city's highest-profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne. At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes' intense 12-year-old son, Bruce, toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy's profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer. As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham's criminal justice system, Gordon confronts imposing gang boss Fish Mooney, and many of the characters who will become renowned villains, including a teenaged Selina Kyle (the future Catwoman), Oswald Cobblepot (the future Penguin), and others like The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker. While GOTHAM centers on Gordon's turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain Sarah Essen, this crime drama also focuses on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, Alfred.

GOTHAM returned for its second season on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. In the season opener, "Rise of the Villains: Damned If You Do," Penguin is King of Gotham and, after a shakeup at the GCPD, Detective James Gordon's moral compass wavers, as he seeks help from Penguin. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne continues to explore the secrets from his father's office, while GOTHAM newcomers Theo Galavan and his sister, Tabitha, make friends with some unlikely allies, a group of dangerous inmates from Arkham. On Monday, February 29, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT, FOX debuted "Wrath of the Villains: Mr. Freeze," the spring premiere of GOTHAM. Penguin takes a hit for Galavan's murder, but doesn't let Gordon off easily. Meanwhile, Gordon and Bullock investigate the body-snatching spree of Victor Fries, one of Gotham's preeminent cryogenics engineers. Guest stars include: Nathan Darrow as Victor Fries, Kristen Hager as Nora Fries, BD Wong as Hugo Strange.

GOTHAM: MAD CITY, the third season of the series, premiered on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. Season 3 peels back the curtain on the infamous criminal organization known as the Court of The Owls. With the Indian Hill escapees on the loose, Jim Gordon must take matters into his own hands as a bounty hunter in Gotham. He makes it his mission to find Hugo Strange, the mastermind behind the horrifying Indian Hill experiments, and Fish Mooney, one of Strange's subjects. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective Harvey Bullock and Captain Nathaniel Barnes remain at the forefront of the fight against crime in the monster-ridden city. Also, Bruce Wayne, with the help of his trusted butler and mentor, Alfred Pennyworth, and former Wayne Enterprises employee, Lucius Fox, discovers there are still more secrets to uncover regarding his parents' murders. As the city sinks deeper into chaos, GOTHAM continues to follow the evolving stories of the city's most malevolent villains: The Penguin; Edward Nygma/the future Riddler; Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman; Barbara Kean, Tabitha Galavan/Tigress, and Butch Gilzean. The series also catches up with the future Poison Ivy, who, after an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, finds herself reborn as a young woman who's harnessed the full power of her charms; and will dive into the origin stories of Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter, a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness; and the Tweed Brothers. In the season opener, "Better to Reign in Hell," Gordon works in a monster-ridden Gotham as a bounty hunter and seeks to find answers about the Indian Hill escapees, and why their powers appear to be killing them. Meanwhile, Bruce's doppelganger roams the streets, and Barbara and Tabitha open a new nightclub called The Sirens.

Season 4, GOTHAM: A DARK KNIGHT, premiered on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. With the Court of Owls decimated, the aftermath of the Tetch virus crippling the city, and every (surviving) villain in Gotham's underworld jockeying for power, Jim Gordon and the GCPD will have their hands full. What threat does Ra's al Ghul pose, and will Penguin regain his title as the King of Gotham? In the season opener, "Pax Penguina," Gordon fears Jonathan Crane (guest star Charlie Tahan) is still alive and back in Gotham, when The Scarecrow's signature MO is used in a series of robberies. Meanwhile, Penguin's "licensing" of crime in the city backfires during the grand opening of his new Iceberg Lounge. Also, in the aftermath of his encounter with Ra's Al Ghul, Bruce begins his vigilante watch. Guest Cast: Michael Buscemi as Merton, Larry Pine as Mayor Burke, Michael Maize as Grady, Charlie Tahan as Jonathan Crane, Anthony Carrigan as Zsasz, Damian Young as Warden Reed, Maggie Geha as Ivy Pepper.

FOX premiered the fifth and final season of GOTHAM on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT, which wraps up the beloved series in a farewell event that will focus on Bruce Wayne's ultimate transformation into the Caped Crusader, as Jim Gordon tries to hold together a city on the edge of chaos. FOX also has ordered two additional episodes of the hit series, raising the season order to 12 episodes, and bringing the full series order to 100 episodes. Following the events of last season, the fifth season, titled GOTHAM: LEGEND OF THE DARK KNIGHT, picks up with Gotham City split amongst Gordon and the GCPD, and some of the most notorious fan-favorite villains, as the heroes try to gain control and salvage what's left of the deteriorating city. This season also introduces new villains, including the iconic Bane (guest star Shane West).
