Plot Synopsis

The FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy to consult on a case when notorious serial killer Joe Carroll escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree -- but this time Carroll has company because, while in prison, he was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. Hardy was responsible for Carroll's capture nine years ago -- after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature -- and he is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it's been a long time since Hardy has been in the field, and this investigation is his redemption, his call to action. But this time he's not in charge; he's working closely with two FBI agents: tough-as-nails Jennifer Mason and young, razor-sharp Mike Weston. After Hardy uncovers Carroll's plot and once again proves his worth in the field, he becomes ever more determined to end Carroll's game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started, especially after Carroll's accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Now Hardy gets a second chance, but he's faced with not one, but a cult of serial killers. Season 2 catches up with Ryan in the wake of a horrific new murder spree, which furthers his suspicion that Joe Carroll's reign of terror is far from over. THE FOLLOWING returned for a special, 90-minute Season 2 preview on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 10:30pm ET/7:30pm PT (approximate time), immediately after the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME and postgame analysis. THE FOLLOWING returned one week later for its official season premiere on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT, immediately following an encore presentation of the Season 2 preview. On Monday, March 2, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT, FOX premiered the third season of THE FOLLOWING. Season 3 opens with Joe Carroll awaiting execution on death row and all signs of his following erased, Hardy has moved on from the dark events of his past. But his newfound happiness is shattered when a series of brutally staged tableaus threatens to tear open old wounds. Ryan and his team are forced to unravel a twisted web of violence before it destroys them all -- leading them to face a terrifying truth: Joe Carroll was just the beginning
