Plot Synopsis

Executive produced and hosted by Lara Spencer, EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE is a half-hour program that follows Lara and the appraisal team -- including Jacquie Denny, co-founder of the estate sale and auction website Everything But The House -- as they scour homes with a fine-tooth comb to find potentially valuable items that can be listed in competitive online auctions. There's one catch: the promise of big rewards comes with a little risk. To attract millions of eager buyers who want to purchase everything from hand-me-downs and knick-knacks to antique furniture and collectible sneakers, the team begins the bidding at just one dollar. Each 30-minute program features a different home.

On Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 10am ET/PT, HGTV premiered the pilot, but the cable channel had no other episodes on its schedule at that time. The pilot focused on estates, working with heirs. In the pilot, "Auntie's Treasures," twin sisters Val and Dina are overwhelmed by all of the possessions they inherited in their late Aunt Angela's Connecticut home. They enlist help to try to make $10,000 from the sale of Angela's treasures to pay for a vacation in her honor. Working from the basement to the attic, the treasure hunters scour the home and discover potentially lucrative items, including a mink coat, a John Lennon bracelet, and two Joan Miro lithographs that, if real, could fetch thousands of dollars and anchor the sale. The 455 items are authenticated before the auction, but it all comes down to the bidders. With every auction starting at just $1, Val and Dina cross their fingers, hoping to hit their sale goal of $10,000 and take the trip of a lifetime to honor their aunt. Throughout the season, Lara shows families how they can make big bucks from an endless array of household items, from art to jewelry and turntables to coin collections.

Twenty-two months later -- on Friday, March 19, 2021 from 9-10pm ET/PT -- EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE returned for its official series premiere with back-to-back episodes. Throughout the first season, Lara shows families how they can make big bucks from an endless array of household items, from art to jewelry and turntables to coin collections. In the first episode, "Retirement Riches," a mother ready to retire joins forces with Lara to sort through her lifetime collection of porcelain figurines, decorative sculptures and antique purses. To help meet her $10,000 goal, her son offers his own sports memorabilia, toys and trading cards from childhood.

Season 2 of EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE debuted on Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 9-10pm ET/PT on HGTV, with back-to-back new episodes. In the new season, Lara Spencer and a team of expert appraisers again scour clients' homes for buried treasures that might be worth big money. Lara works with the appraisal team, including Jacquie Denny, co-founder of the estate sale and auction website Everything But The House. During each half-hour episode, the team searches each home for potentially valuable items, anything from vintage clothing and sports memorabilia to antique furniture and kitschy keepsakes, to list in live and online auctions. However, there is one catch -- to attract eager buyers, the team begins the bidding at just one dollar.

After a 13-month break, EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE returned with new episodes on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 10pm ET/PT on a new network: Lifetime. In this new episode, "Dolls, Balls and Deck the Halls," when a family moved into their historic Victorian home, they also inherited the entire contents of the house. Lara and her team step in to comb through the property and find enough items to sell so this hard-working family can take a much-needed vacation.

Following a 5-month break, EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE returned with new episodes on Saturday, January 13, 2024 from Noon-1pm ET/PT on a new network: A&E. In the day's first new episode (Noon), "An Eclectic Collection," a family of restaurateurs has accumulated an eclectic collection, but many of their pieces are gathering dust in the barn. Lara plans to donate the proceeds to a local charity, but convincing this family to part with some items becomes a huge challenge. Then, in the second episode (12:30pm), "Exotic Treasures," a couple who loves to salvage hidden gems from storage containers is running out of livable space in their collection-packed house. Lara and her team get their treasure train back on track so they can uncover what's valuable and reclaim their family home.
