Plot Synopsis

ESCAPING THE PROPHET is a one-hour reality series that follows Flora Jessop, a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), as she and her partner, Brandon Jeffs, work with law enforcement, the Attorney General of Arizona, and a network of inside informants to help families flee the community. On her mission to take down one of the most reportedly dangerous polygamist cults in America, social activist Flora uses her difficult memories and her passion to deliver justice to the very people that she feels wronged her. Flora was born into a polygamous family belonging to the FLDS in Colorado City, Arizona, where she had two mothers and 27 siblings. From a young age, Flora allegedly withstood sexual and physical abuse at the hands of her father. This abuse allegedly continued until she was 16 years old; she left the church when forced into marriage with her first cousin, whom she later divorced. Brandon grew up as one of thousands of grandchildren of Rulon Jeffs, the FLDS' leader from 1986 to 2002. Brandon allegedly suffered from years of abuse at the hands of his uncle, Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed "prophet." At 15 years old, Brandon left the church in search of a new path and purpose. Now, in each 60-minute episode, Flora and Brandon attempt to help these FLDS families: Lenora, who is hoping she'll be able to leave the cult with her children -- daughters who want to live with their father and a defiant son; Ruth, a devout FLDS member, who has been ostracized by the community and has received death threats; a man named Edwin, who tells his local church pastor he needs help; Robert, already free from the FLDS, who suspects that his two children are being abused in his ex-wife's home; 17-year-old Taylor, who is in trouble and on the verge of being kicked out by his parents; and Flora's sister, Ruby, whose family is at risk of getting sucked back in by the church because they're struggling to adjust to life outside the FLDS community.
