Plot Synopsis

EDGE OF ALASKA is a one-hour reality series that follows the residents of McCarthy, Alaska, which is an isolated town surrounded by extreme wilderness and a refuge for people who don't want to be found. While some believe in continuing the town's frontier way of life, others feel the future of McCarthy depends on dragging itself into the modern age. Built during the Gold Rush in 1900, McCarthy was once a vibrant and flourishing city. Today, with over 100 miles between the residents and the nearest law enforcement, only 42 people still brave the extreme conditions to live in this secluded. Each of the roughly four dozen residents of McCarthy is living this dangerous wilderness life for their own, very different, reasons. Neil Darish moved to McCarthy with dreams of restoring the small town to its former glory. After spending years buying property after property in downtown McCarthy, he plans to bring this frontier town into the 21st century. On the opposite end of the spectrum are long-standing residents like Jeremy Keller, who came to McCarthy hoping to escape the evils of modern day society, and will fight to protect the old way at any cost. As diverse as the citizens of McCarthy are, they are mavericks and trailblazers, risk takers and rabble rousers, all attempting to escape their past by surviving at the end of America. On Friday, August 14, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT, Discovery premiered the second season of EDGE OF ALASKA, immediately following an eight-hour marathon (1-9pm) of encore episodes. Last season, businessman Neil Darish upgraded a power grid for the town, pushing McCarthy further into the 21st century. Now in the dead of winter, Neil, Jeremy Keller, and other locals have come together to defend each other against a common foe: a pack of overly aggressive wolves that is threatening McCarthy by killing sled dogs and livestock. But this threat can only unite them for so long. When Neil begins the exploration of the abandoned Mother Lode mine, the site of his proposed mine tour, his call for local workers will divide the town. Who will choose to work for him and who will work against him? If the mine's unexplored interior is as intriguing as Neil hopes, he'll break ground on his biggest secret yet, which is sure to change McCarthy forever. Season 3 of EDGE OF ALASKA premiered on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Having divided the town with his ambitious project to open the old Motherload copper mine to tourism, resident businessman Neil Darish's impulsive decisions have now sent him over budget and behind schedule, forcing a mysterious silent investor to pay Neil a tense visit. Farmsteader Jeremy Keller, who came to McCarthy to raise his family off the grid, has always opposed Neil's plans to profit and modernize. But now, with the threat of an outsider so dangerously close to taking over McCarthy, Jeremy and his family will face the greatest turning point of their lives.
The fourth and final season of EDGE OF ALASKA premiered on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. After years of working to transform McCarthy into a tourist attraction, Neil Darish is looking to sell his many McCarthy properties in the hopes of a big payday. The preparation requires months of repair and upgrade, requiring him to barter with farmsteaders like Jeremy Keller. As Neil prepares for a major sale and Jeremy works tirelessly to complete his homestead, tensions rise as the two adversaries travel down an explosive collision course towards the finish line. This season, the residents of McCarthy must traverse treacherous terrain and rely on instinctive Alaskan bush ingenuity to preserve their life in the frontier town. But as devoted residents prepare for enormous change, their dream of isolation nearly costs them everything -- including their lives.
