Plot Synopsis

CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT is a one-hour series that features experiential reports driven by fresh voices and perspectives from around the world, as reported by more than a dozen CBS News correspondents. Each 60-minute edition features multiple stories, ranging from on-the-ground reporting of grassroots efforts to combat inner-city gun violence to interviews with those risking their lives to expose corruption to investigations into new terrorist threats. In addition to being presented on the CBS Television Network, CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT is streamed simultaneously on CBSN and to CBS All Access subscribers through the service's live streaming offering of local CBS stations. The series opener features these stories: how ISIS leaders turned a generation of kids into potential killers (correspondent: Charlie D'Agata); Japan attempts to repopulate using robots (correspondent: Adam Yamaguchi); foreign contractors commit visa fraud to expand auto plants across America.

On Monday, August 21, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, CBS premiered the season finale of CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT. In the season ender, CBS News correspondent Reena Ninan goes to the front line of cyber warfare: the nation's hospitals. The broadcast also explores the life-and-death job of journalists in Mexico and how beautiful islands are being lost because of climate change.

Ninan investigates the growing number of cyberattacks on hospitals around the country, where, if successful, hackers can hold hostage some of America's most vulnerable residents. It's a battle not fought in the emergency department, but one that could render them inoperable in a crisis. Ninan also travels to India and talks with some of the white-hat hackers trying to keep American companies and your personal information safe.

From Mexico, Manuel Bojorquez looks at the staggering number of journalists being gunned down by drug gangs across the country as the cartel war escalates. Bojorquez embeds with the many reporters risking their lives to bring the truth about this violence and government corruption to the world.

Also, Seth Doane travels to the South Pacific island of Kiribati where more than 100,000 residents may soon become the world's first "climate change refugees" as ocean levels rise and their nation is at risk of disappearing forever. CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT provides a glimpse at the perilous future for the planet in coming decades as climate change permanently alters the world.
