Plot Synopsis

THE BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS honor the best in music, originally based on the year-end charts of the music trade publication "Billboard" magazine. Now, finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album, single and digital sales, airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on MySpace, Facebook and many of the other most popular online destinations for music. This event was first telecast in 1990 on FOX and held annually in December through 2006. After more than a four-year layoff, THE BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS returned in 2011 to air annually in May on ABC ever since.
Hosted by Kelly Clarkson for the second time, the 2019 BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS aired live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 from 8-11pm ET (live)/PT (tape) on NBC, with performances by Taylor Swift (who opens the program with "ME!", Madonna & Brendon Urie, Ariana Grande, BTS featuring Halsey, Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul (performing a medley of her hits), Ciara, Clarkson, Lauren Daigle, Dan + Shay, Halsey (in a solo performance slot), Jonas Brothers, Tori Kelly, Khalid, and Panic! at the Disco. Plus, Mariah Carey is honored with the Icon Award. Previous Icon recipients include Janet Jackson, Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Cher and more
