Plot Synopsis

A group of four people -- engineer Jem Stansfield, biochemist and zoologist Liz Bonnin, evolutionary biologist Dr. Yan Wong and TV host Dallas Campbell -- investigate scientific principles that govern the world, while demonstrating cutting-edge developments in technology and engineering. In each episode, the team explores and investigates a hot topic or burning question, takes on a challenge that tests their ingenuity and meets the people behind the science. Stansfield takes on these engineering challenges: blowing over a brick house with a vortex cannon; smashing the land speed record with the help of a fire extinguisher and a go-kart; upgrading a square-wheeled skateboard into a motorbike then attempt to jump it into the record books; building a boat out of ice and go for a spin in one of the UK's busiest stretches of water; designing, building and testing a water jet pack; using two domestic vacuum cleaners to climb up the side of a building; defeating the US Navy's latest weapon with no more than some foam and a crash helmet; building a microwave death ray to prove the existence of invisible and untapped energy; and many more MYTHBUSTER like contraptions. Plus, the rest of the team explores these topics: big brother technology that will track every one of us, simply by the way we walk; how to cook an egg with only a newspaper; how the world will survive when its oil supply runs out; jetlag and how to avoid it; the world of comets and how to build one; the science behind hypothermia; optical illusions; sticky stuff; and much more. Finally, the team meets people like the team behind a 1,000mph car, real CSI scientists working with the police to solve crimes, and a controversial scientist who is working to create the first generation of artificial life. BANG GOES THE THEORY is co-produced with the Open University. BBC America aired the U.S. premiere of this series on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 10:20pm ET/PT, and four months later debuted the U.S. premiere of Season 6 on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT, showing three back-to-back episodes.
