Plot Synopsis

ATYPICAL is a half-hour, coming-of-age, comedy series that follows Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum, as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny yet emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? Sam's mother, Elsa, is on her own journey of self-discovery, while his father, Doug, longs for a closer father-son relationship. The series opens with Sam interested in having a girlfriend, so he researches dating advice and puts it to the test. Meanwhile, his overprotective mom Elsa must learn to let go. Netflix released the eight-episode first season of ATYPICAL on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT.

While Elsa and Doug face the aftermath of their marriage crisis and Casey tries to adjust to her new school, Sam prepares for life after graduation. In the season opener, "Juiced!," Sam's frustration at being unable to find a therapist and Casey's anxiety about going to a new school spark a blowup between the two. Then, in the season's second episode, "Penguin Cam and Chill," Casey feels less than welcome at Clayton. Sam asks Paige to spell out the rules of their "casual relationship," while Doug sets boundaries with Elsa.
