Plot Synopsis

Each year since 2008, DIY Network has searched nationwide for America's ugliest yard, showing the transformation in this annual one-hour special. From late February through mid-March, homeowners can upload photos and videos to the DESPERATE LANDSCAPES production website (www.jaytv.net) as part of the casting process. In addition to looking for people who will "stand out from the pack and be original," the production company looks for a house that needs improvement of "both the front of the house and the front yard -- from building porches to creating new driveways and huge new front walkways." From 2008-2010, four finalists were selected to appear on the TODAY SHOW, where they competed against each other in head-to-head, landscape-themed challenges, with the winner earning a $25,000 makeover. Since 2011, only a single finalist has been selected at the completion of each year's casting process. Then, licensed contractor Jason Cameron and his DESPERATE LANDSCAPES crew spend two days transforming that lucky winner's yard into a outdoor oasis. Past winners include: Leslie & Chris Srodek-Johnson of Sagamore Hills, OH (2008); Kimberly & Cliff Dees of Ft. Lauderdale, FL (2009); Kevin Richards & Marni Ratzel of Niwot, CO (2010); Mike & Erin Penn of Dexter, MI (2011); Patty & Cas Stochmal of Derby, CT (2012); Ricky Ruffin & Ronna Sadowsky of Escondido, CA (2013); Connie & Jason Vela of Helotes, TX (2014); the Hoofards (2015); Randi and Tim Riefenberg (2016); David and Melissa Laster (2017).
