Plot Synopsis

Based on Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name, AMERICAN GODS posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities. Laura Moon is Shadow Moon's ethereal wife, who has been preparing for her husband's prison release, instead goes on an unexpected journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship -- and affords her a second chance to get things right. Meanwhile, Mad Sweeney, a down-on-his-luck leprechaun, is having a hard time understanding how he lost his charm, but he's never deprived of a fight while in the employment of Mr. Wednesday. There's alos Bilquis, an ancient goddess of love, who craves the worship she inspired in eras long gone, and is eager to find that same relevance in today's world ruled by technology, which is falls under the purview of Technical Boy, a New God. He's desperate to prove himself -- and he's hungry for respect and power -- but struggles to keep him impulsivity and petulance in check. Before its television premiere on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on Starz, AMERICAN GODS debuted publicly at the SXSW festival on March 11 at 11am CT at the Vimeo Theater in the Austin Convention Center followed by an extended Q&A moderated by KCRW's Elvis Mitchell. Showrunners and cast in attendance will include Bryan Fuller, Michael Green, Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, Crispin Glover, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Orlando Jones, Jonathan Tucker and Betty Gilpin.

The second season of AMERICAN GODS premieres on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on Starz. In the second season, the battle between Old Gods and New Gods continues to brew as we join Mr. Wednesday just a few short hours after his declaration of war and the epic showdown that ensued at Easter's party. While Mr. World plans revenge for Wednesday's attack and Technical Boy searches for Media, Mr. Wednesday continues his quest to pitch the case for war to the Old Gods with Shadow, Laura and Mad Sweeney in tow. When things don't go as planned at the House on the Rock, both Old and New Gods, as well as those they meet along the way, find themselves on journeys across America -- all destined in some way for Cairo, Illinois. Shadow will begin to understand this strange world of the gods and carve out a place in it as a believer in order to survive, but change will require sacrifice. In the season opener, "House on the Rock," Mr. Wednesday continues his quest to pitch the case for war to the Old Gods, following the epic showdown at Easter's party. Meanwhile, Mr. World plans revenge and Technical Boy goes on the hunt for Media.

Season 3 of AMERICAN GODS premiered on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT on Starz. The series remains an epic story of an inevitable war building between the Old Gods of mythology and our New Gods of technology. Shadow Moon is a man pulled into the service of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, only to discover that not only is his charismatic but un-trustable boss actually the Norse All-Father god Odin, he's also...Shadow's father. In Season 3, Shadow angrily pushes this apparent destiny away, and settles in the idyllic snowy town of Lakeside, Wisconsin -- to make his own path, guided by the gods of his Black ancestors, the Orishas. But he'll soon discover that this town's still waters run deep, and dark, and bloody, and that you don't get to simply reject being a god. The only choice -- and a choice you have to make -- is what kind of god you're going to be.
