Plot Synopsis

This reality series follows a group of Hutterites living in the King Colony near Lewiston, Montana, as they hold desperately to their sacred traditions while fighting the modern temptations of the outside world. The Hutterites are a communal people, living on hundreds of scattered colonies throughout the prairies of northwestern North America -- there are about 45,000 Hutterites living on 460 colonies of which about 50 are in Montana. On average, fifteen families live and work on the typical Hutterite colony, where they farm, raise livestock and produce manufactured goods for sustenance. Hutterites believe in community of goods, in which all material goods are held in common, all members of the colony are provided for equally and no assets are kept for personal gain. Hutterites do not have personal bank accounts; rather all earnings are held communally and funding and necessities are distributed according to one's needs. Each colony lives together, works together, and worships God together, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for their entire lives, attending a 30-minute church service daily and a 60-minute service every Sunday and on religious holidays. King Colony, located about 10 miles west of Lewistown on Highway 87 and then 2 miles north along Kolin/Ross Fork Road, is made up of 13 families with 59 people and they are almost all related. Even though many of their farm and ranch operations are for their own consumption, they do have a commercial dairy and cow/calf operation. While most of the colony is holding tight to the age-old traditions of their ancestors, others are flirting with modern society. Some feel that bringing modern technology, education, and ideas into the colony will only help it, while others fear that this modern way of thinking threatens their very existence.
