Plot Synopsis

Executive produced and hosted by Will Smith and Larry Wilmore, AMEND: THE FIGHT FOR AMERICA is a six-part docuseries that explores the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution -- which, in 1868, promised liberty and equal protection for all persons -- as America's most enduring hallmark of democracy. Amend deploys a groundbreaking narrative format featuring a number of luminaries (Mahershala Ali, Diane Lane, Samuel L. Jackson, Pedro Pascal, Yara Shahidi, and more) breathing life into speeches and writings by the Fourteenth Amendment's most ardent advocates and foes (including Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Andrew Johnson) with insights from an inclusive array of contemporary thought leaders and experts. AMEND takes a multimedia journey through American history that encourages viewers to question what a "United States" really means. On Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the all six episodes of AMEND:

"Citizen": After escaping slavery, Frederick Douglass becomes a pivotal voice calling for citizenship for Black Americans, a dream realized in the 14th Amendment.

"Resistance": After ratification, violent atrocities, court rulings and the Lost Cause ideology systematically subvert the 14th Amendment's promises of equality.

"Wait": As the civil rights movement gains momentum in the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. orchestrates protests that goad President John F. Kennedy into action.

"Control": In the 1970s, women appeal to evolving interpretations of the 14th Amendment in their fight to achieve equality and control their own destinies.

"Love": After decades of setbacks, the struggle for same-sex marriage equality culminates in an Ohio couple's case taken up by the Supreme Court in 2015.

"Promise": Immigrants have long put their hope in America, but intolerant policies, racism and shocking violence have frequently trampled their dreams.
