On Saturday, July 9, 2022 Lifetime premieres the eagerly anticipated limited series FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC: THE ORIGIN, which is inspired by books from best-selling author V.C. Andrews. This gripping new series tells the story of the headstrong and determined Olivia Winfield (Jemima Rooper) who is working alongside her beloved father, Mr. Winfield (Harry Hamlin), when she finds herself unexpectedly wooed by one of the nation’s most eligible bachelors, Malcolm Foxworth (Max Irons). After a whirlwind romance, Olivia finds herself as the mistress of the imposing Foxworth Hall, where she soon discovers that the fairytale life she expected has quickly become a nightmare. Under Malcolm’s debonair exterior lies a dark heart, and a twisted evil lurks inside Foxworth Hall that will threaten Olivia’s happiness and that of her children. Her attempts to keep them all safe ultimately push Olivia to become to most terrifying version of herself, leading to her inevitable—and notorious—decision to lock her grandchildren in the attic. The timing of this release is relevant to the current political climate in the US, as it reminds us of the lack of control women had over their bodies, their lives, their money, and their happiness near the beginning of the 1900s. Pregnancy, rape, abortion, and LGBT issues play important roles in the story. The main character, Olivia, leaves behind a modern lifestyle, working in partnership in business with her father, to find herself in the much less progressive South where she no longer has the same rights she grew up with. Watching her adapt to her new lack of power and learn to harden herself in her violent battles with her husband, the overtly cruel Malcolm, is dramatic and sets her as the clear protagonist despite some of the horrible choices she makes along the way. Shot on location in Bucharest, Romania this series sports some pretty impressive production values including costume and set design. This is not your ripped-from the –headlines low budget lifetime movie! Fans of the books will not be disappointed.

Starring: Jemima Rooper as Olivia (Winfield) Foxworth, Max Irons, as Malcolm Foxworth, T’Shan Williams as Nella Jennings Foxworth Hall’s longtime staff member and Olivia’s observant housekeeper, Harry Hamlin as Mr. Winfield Olivia’s father, Kelsey Grammer as Garland Foxworth Malcom’s father, Alana Boden as Alicia Foxworth new wife of Gaarland Foxworth, Hannah Dodd as Corinne Foxworth Olivia’s daughter; Kate Mulgrew as Mrs. Steiner Malcolm’s loyal house manager and head of the Foxworth Hall staff; Callum Kerr as Christopher, a close relative of the Foxworth family whose life will be eternally intertwined with Corinne’s from the moment they set eyes on each other; Paul Wesley as John Amos Olivia’s cousin whose revelations change her life forever; Luke Fetherston and Buck Braithwaite as Malcolm and Olivia's sons Joel Foxworth and Mal Foxworth, respectively. Question: What drew you to this project and how to did you find your characters?

Jemima Rooper: The job was four months in Romania and I just had a baby, but because the part was so fantastic I was like, I have to at least make a tape, have a go. And then of course it all happened and I then read "Flowers in the Attic" before we started shooting to try and get an idea. And I love our project. I love that we get to find out a little bit why this woman has ended up so extreme and I think it's a sort of brilliant and believable explanation as to what makes a monster or someone to behave monstrously. And it's not black and white and that’s really interesting. From the scripts as they are, I don't see the monster, I see Olivia is just misunderstood. I completely sort of sympathize with her up until maybe the last episode possibly. This part is a total gift, so I only have amazing things to say. I think probably Max had a harder journey because there wasn’t as much that was easy to see at first that was a way to sympathize with. But certainly from my point of view with Olivia, there’s quite the backstory and there’s a lot that happens to her, which you can see keeps pushing her down this dark path.

Max Irons: I was aware of "Flowers in the Attic," but I never read it. However, when I was thinking of doing this job I would say to people, "Yeah, I'm considering taking this job 'Flowers in the Attic'," and the looks on their faces told me a lot. I then looked into it and the sort of morbid curiosity in me, it drew me in. And I think that that’s what a lot of people feel about V.C. Andrews and these books. And as for playing this character okay, Malcolm is a bit of a monster. He's a megalomaniac. He's a narcissist. He's psychopathic at moments. His father was very absent. His mother, who was overly present during his formative years, completely suddenly abandoned him. And this was a time where therapy wasn’t a thing, that a young man would’ve been abandoned with these confusing feelings and understandings of the world around him, and to draw his own conclusion. And while Malcolm is a monster, he is dealing with the world on the world’s terms from his perspective. And I think that’s how we have to look at as an actor. But it's my job not to judge him. It's to ask why he is the way he is. I felt the need to kind of, when we finish a scene go, By the way, I don’t think any of those things I just said, or “I’m not a horrible, psychopathic pervert.” But it is quite fun to play.
